THE WAY 'KATIE DIVINED
THE TRUTH
" At Katie's frantic wail I rusb-
ed past Lillian Into the bar and
met tho girl at 'the top of the
stairs.'" :: "'. M r r - - ' ' ;
She 'was ' utterly . gTlef-str icken ,
wringing - her hamlsf, and weep-
ing-alond as she hurried up we
ntairs. I had seen Katie in too
many ' emotional tantrums, 1 how
ever, to ' be .seriously1 alarmed,
hut her erief-- was genuine and
unmistakable' and , I . pn 'my
arm around her .shoulders as
she fairly flnng herself -upon me
'Oh say4 It no frue!": she re
peated wailingly, - choking pon
my "name as she tried to ufter
it. With Lillian's help I drew
her into the nearest, room.
which h a p p e n e d ,'to be my
father's, and -shut the door; upon
her: sobs, which I knew - would
rise ln,tx shrieks It she were not
pacified. .
"Stop this at once, Katie," 1
said, taking her by. the shoulders
I long since learned 'the most
effective way of dealing, with her1
when i she . is hysterica! "ano
tell rae what is Uhe matter . with
you." . :,
She ' blinked, choked again,-
struggled . with' her sobs, and
finally found " her , -voice.'
'Oh, " Missis GraHhm. v dere
sooch a horrid vomans down
stairs! She coom to my kitchen
door, start to onen it.' and 1 hear
her say v to somebody 1 else : ; Oh.:
Henry! . what an I awful mess;
Just imagine having to clean up
after sooch peoples. Why, . they
must be regular catties'." .
Katie is a born mimic, and
her 'rendition of the speech of
the unknown woman !. brought ' a
smile to both Lillian's face and
mine and we exchanged" startled,
significant fiances, ) '. , X'.
The new owhers of the prop
erty! They. 'must be downstairs,
and what a reception' they must
have had! " I released': Katie's
shoulders and '' started 'hurtlediy
ior the door. But' Lillian's voice,
cool, drawling, stopped me. .
."Better wait a bit, 'Madge,"
