Letter No, King's Food Products Company, Dehydrated Fruits and Vegetables, j The Dalles Plant, The Dalles, Ore., February iu, iza. - Mr.: Gideon Stolz. Court Street. Salem, Ore Dear Sir: -Replying tn vnnr lfttf Ar tt tha Bth in which - . you asK wnemer 11 WOUitt w u- Yisable to mix lime with commer cial fertilizers this to make the distributing growth one expense. I do not thnk that this could be rliW- in th first olace the lime added to the fertilizer would act on the same principle as a filler and dilate the fertilizer. Then, on the other hand, all complete commercial fertilizers contain su- ' perphosphate or phosphoric acid. To give you an understanding of what superphosphate Is. will say that it is mined in "the form of rock, known as lime phosphate. In this form lit contains three parts "lime ; and one part phos- I phorlc acid. This rock is finely ground but in this condition only very small per cent of the phos- phoric acid can be dissolved in water. ' To correct this tendency and make It more ; soluble sul phuric acid is added and this re moves two parts of te lime, leav ing one part liur. and one part phosphoric acid. In this. condi-1 tion It is' called superphosphate and nsually about sixteen to sev enteen per cent of it is readily soluble. Now then. It is claimed that if lime is added " to this that to a large measure it will ' revert back to its original form, or into ah insoluble state.; So you see that j it would - not be advisable to mix j the lime with a commercial fer-1 tllizer in applying it to the land. In regard to the amount of fer- tilizer that should be used to the I acre of loganberries, I think, that 1 your figures of 150 to 200 pounds! are entirely too law f or a '-com-1 plete . fertilizer. This would be sufficient if nitrate of. soda were used alone. In the Gresham and Puyallup districts 1000 pounds tc tillzers. In. the Gresham district they use a 2-10-4 analysis and in I the Puyallup district mostly a 2-1 10-2 this for raspberries. How-1 evef, I am of the opinion that lo- ganberries would be belief ited by a heavier application of potash I and I would recomniend.. if a like formula were used, to use a 2-10-jail 6 mixture. ' I I expoet to be In Salem possibly I sometime this coming week and will go over these matters with you in turtner detail. Will also discuss with you the amounts of fertilizers to be applied to the prune orchards. Thanking yon for your inquiry,' I am, yours very truly, King's Food Products Company. : i Geo H. Gill. Field Department. The Cost to Growers. ' In order that each grower can have before him a basis on which he can figure cost,, I Requested llarley p. White to give me ap proximate figures on ithe fourl IcadlnK fertilizers recommended P2 ?aci grower cau figure tbj cosll FEBRUARY 22, 1923 per acre on loganberries and down Eto cost per prune tree according to the formula He cnooaes to make up. It Is apparent thai this can be varied according; . to past treat ment of "orchard or berry patch. ' - - ear sa Mr. Gideon Stolz, Salem, Ore., Dear Sir: r-We hare been able to secure prices On fertilizers and quote as follows, ex warehouse; Superphosphate, 21, $32 per ton. INHrate of soda, 18; $70 per ton. Tankage, high grade, .$4 5 per ton. Muriate . of potash, 52, $65 p. ton. . . Hare part In stock and balance will be in-withln a. few days. This would be on quantity as pep list submitted. Your truly, v D. A. WHITE &. SONS. , Per II. O. White, Salem, Ore., Feb. 2, 1923. t This has been quite a task. I hare taken much time in collect ing and bringing together what I think is valuable information to all berry and prune growers, and I feel well compensated in the in formation" I get out of this effort, ft3 Shall apply It On my prunes i and loganberries this year. - rrn ...,.. o V. .. T0 secure a higher price for our loganberries, we must ; grow' a -nlM rin-v .amr ,ifu - per cent of sugar so it will stand up better after canning and will yield a larger per cent of dried berries. That this is possible I am fully convinced, hence, its neces sity must be apparent. - -Gideon Stolz, Salem, Ore., Feb. 15, 1923. " TIMELY POULTRY Hatchings of the Heavier Breeds Should Be Started in February. (Following are some 'timely notes from a current news bulle tin of the department of, indus trial journalism of the Oregon Agricultural- college:) . Hatchings of - heavier breeds of chickens should be , started in February,: and for layers March and April Is the best time, so they may hatch and mature in time for heavy fall production when prices are right. : Feed and range conditions are not so good for later hatchings, the invlgor- latin influence of the hot weath- er season is missed and full ben- lent of the higher fall prices Is iiosi. bmce heavy breeds or cmcK ens. are slower maturing tnan tne light i breeds, they Bhould be hatched earlier in order jto arrive at production at the same time. It 'has been said that one of in the ' main reasons for failure te poultry Dusmess ues m not Betting egg3 hatched In time for the fall season ; of high produc tion and high market prices. O. A.
