Apollo Club Men Sing and Play Much Together Although they receive no compensation- for the great amount of time given toward the produc tion of three big concerts each season; the Apollo club boys feel that being an active member, like virtue,' is Its own reward," says 6ne of the members, "and then there ia ' the keen fascination in developing a program from the first glimpse of 'the new songs to the 'grand finale when these songs finished, tried and true, are wafted forth ifor the pleas ure of the club's many friends. The process is not unlike the mining, cutting1 and polishing of precious gems, since, from the rough 1first time over" to the concert rendition is indeed a far cry. . The educational value and character building qualities of active , participation in the work of the Apollo club are big fac tors in holding the singers to gether. To sit under the baton of a director such as Prof. John R. Sites and gain a considerable knowledge otf the beauties and intricacies of song and its pos sible harmonies is considered by the members as being abundantly worth all of the time and effort required for the success of the club's mission. V Singing ; together throughout the many weeks previous to a concert, the development of the esprit de corps among the sing ers comes; automatically. Perhaps not many of its host of admirers appreciate the sig nifiance ot the club's "motto" when it is heroically and har moniously pealed forth as a pre lude to each of the concert -programs. In the Latin it reads: "Ecce quam bonum, quam que jucundum habitare in jfratres unum." It's a standing gag with the boys, when they sing it for themselves, that "Al Gille will now give us the translation of this charming serAiment." Sure enough, Af lifts his "first bass" voice and growls, "Aw shucks! It means, Behold! ' How good it Is for bretherem to dwell to gether in unity, or something to that efect." Salem Js to be treated to a concert by gone of the country's really great artists. . Oh Tuesday evening, February $0, Paul Alt- house, celebrated tenor . of the Metropolitan Opera company, will sing at the armory. This con cert is the second of the Salem Artist series, the tfirst number having been given last October by Cyrena Van Gordon, prima donna contralto, of the Chicago Opera company. Althouse has but recently re turned from a concert jtour. of Australia where he sang in Joint recital with Arthur, Middleton, baritone. Australian critics - ac claimed him as "a tenor of the rare Caruso order," adding fur ther that "his singing stands faborable comparison with the amous Italian." Althouse' pro grams are, for the greater part. American and offer a splendid variety of favorite tenor select ions. Much Interest Is being shown in thei doming of Althouse and a good percentage for the concert is anticipated. . . Justice Harris Selected for Lincbjn Day Address . -i , President Jay H.
