More Development in For
eign and Economic Situ
ation is Awaited
I. . "
1 - ,
NEW YORK, Feb. 1. Little
progress was made by today's
stock market whick seemed to be
marking time pending, more defi
nite developments In the domestic
business 'and foreign political and
economic Fituations. Prices gen
erally ruled within narrow and
irregular limits with the profes
sionals doing most. of the trading
and the so-called outsiders show
ing no disposition to either buy
or selbat present prices.
Some selling took place at the
start in response to another break
in he Durant motors and related
i.'-sues, but it was confined princi
pally to motors, chemicals and
a few specialties. Continued
heaviness of continental exchange,
and a higher renewal rate for call
money influenced -bearish senti
ment, but the "shorts" brought
out comparatively little stock and
sufficient buying support was
forthcoming . to steady the list.
Trading was dull on the rally.
There were few conspicuous
strong spots in the industrial and
specialty list.
Announcement of another in
crease of 25 cents a barrel In
Pennsylvania crude prices and an
increase of 10 cents a barrel in
the price of bunker fuel oil In
New York harbor were the prin
sipal items of trade news.
Trade in rails was sluggish, a
few dividend paying issues show
ing rigns of heaviness.
Call money opened at 4 per
cent and then advanced to 5.
Time money rates were unchang
ed at 4 bid and 4 asked with
a few long term loans being ar
ranged at the higher figure and
some shorter maturities Teported
at 4 per cent. Interior institu
tions are making more- inquiries

CHAPTER 226
THE CURIOUS FREAK OF VAN
DALISM MADGE'S LETTERS
MUTELY DISCLOSED.
' - ' 1 - '" '
"Oh, Lillian!" I sobbed, strain
ing away from her encircling
armji. J't Cahnot bear it. Look!"
Her clasp upon me tightened.
"I know, dear." Her voice was
low and soothing. "But yoo can
do nothing to help matters now
until the bouse has been warmed.
Come on down and start the fur
nace, and then we will go over to
Mrs. Durkee's."
"I must put- some of these
things back first, Lillian." I said
obstinately. 'It seems to me ex
actly as if my little mother's
grave had been despoiled by
ghouls."
She released me instantly. .
"But you will hurry, won't
you?" she coaxed. .
"I know I can start that fur
nace," Edith Fairfax said, and de
spite my dislike of the girl I
couldn't help paying tribute to the
delicacy of feeling which impelled
her to take herself away from mv
grief over my wrecked keepsake
trunk.
"Of course you can." Lillian's
response was prompt and grateful.
"I'll just run down with you to
make sure no bogies are lurking
in the.. cellar, and then I'll leave
you at the furnace throttle and
come back to Madge."
Regarding the! Wreckage.'
They went out of the room, and
I surmised that Lillian's real rea
son for accompanying Edith was
to assure herself that the furnace
pipes had not been tampered
with. In matters of this sort she
never trusts any eyes but h?r
own. She probably also thought
that it would be better for me to
be entirely alone for a-minute or
two, although she knows that Is

any sorrow or joy! that comes fo
me her presence is no more an In

Before they had fairly left tha
room I was down on my knees iu
the motley heap! into which my
most prized treasures had , been
flung.. There was nothing of in
trinsic value! in the trunk I had
taken my mother's modest pieces .
of jewelry and her old thin silver
to my safety deposit box ih the
bank before leaving hut her let
ters, pictures, old documents, Iho
few letters Dicky had written to
me during the whirlwind court
ship, little cherished souvenirs of
my mother, my baby and my hu
band all had been torn out of
their careful wrappings and
thrown on. the floor.
For a dazed minute or two I
could do nothing but gaze dumb
ly at them, and let my eyes roam
from heap to heap in a futile ef
fort to determine what was mis
sing. I had not yet begun sorting
them when Lilian came into th
room, breathlessly, as if she had
been running.
' "l .knew you couldn't have be
gun i disturbing them , yet," she
said. . "And 1 wanted to be Aere
when you .did. I don't mind tell-' ,
tng you that this trunk is most
significant to me. The contents of
the others, while 1 dumped out .
have not been , treated in this
way."
Lilian Has a Clue. -
- j
. She picked up a crumpled and
torn piece of heavy letler paper
as she spoke, and held it, out to
me with her eyes carefully avert
ed from the writing upon It.
"Would you mind telling m'i
from whom this letter is?", she
said. 'Also tell me just what' ha
been, done to it."
I took it from her with a hand
that trembled. '
. 'It is one of 'Dicky's letters to
me, torn In two"," ".I said, then I
held it toward her Impulsively.
"There is nothing here which
you cannot see, Lillian," I said'
earnestly. "Think of the profane
eyes that must have been reading .
them." . '" -j-, -
"Don't ' think of it," she re
turned bluntly. -It will do yoa
no good. Just look at this."
She had smoothed out the
crumpled piece of paper a part
of a letter from which the other
part had been torn and as shi
held it up I saw that it had been
slashed or punched as with a
knife or stilletto.
"May I ask you a great favor,
Madge?" Lillian asked gravely,
- "You know that," I returned.
"Then please do nothing, with
these things until It Is warm, and
I have time to help you. I want
to go over them all, and I don't
want any one of them straighten
ed out until I can be wlt you to
tabulate them. May I not lock tha
door and leave the room undis
turbed? No one else can see it.
If the house gets warm and is
aired sufficiently by tonight we
might sleep here -Marion could
stay . over at Mrs. - Durkee's, an-;
then you and I could' sort .tbesi .
things at our leisure."
. I saw that there was eomeinint
vital behind the curious requeM
that she had made, and my confi
dence In her as well as my affecs
tlon for her made me respond
heartily:
"You know that I will do, what
ever you wish, dear girl."
; "Thank you." .
1 She put out her hand, drew ma
up from the floor, and ' moved
with me toward the door. I lock
ed it with much the feeling of
covering, a grave. , I ',
"Now.said Ullian briskly, and
I knew that ' she meant to keep
my mind away from that locked
