New Low Reached in Week
Only to More Than
Recover Loss
CHICAOO, Dec. 30. Grain
markets were greatly unsettled
today, breaking to a new low for
the week early, only to more than
recover the loss later. The un
easiness apparently was a result
of year-end evening up. At the
finish wheat was l-2c down to
1 1-4 up, with May 1.22 6-8 to
1.22 3-4 and July 1.13 3-8 to
1.13 1-3. Corn closed halw to
5-8 higher; oats varied from 3-8
off to 1-8 5 1-4 advance and
provisions ranged from 5c lower
to. 12 higher.
Scattered liquidation was on in
the wheat market with a contin
uation of pressure from eastern
longs at the start. The ensuing
reaction, carrying the market to
above yesterday's finish, was
chiefly caused by short covering
.Trade was on a broad scale and
fluctuations were rapid. At one
time May was off 6 1-4 from the
high of Thursday and July was
off ' 4 3-8. December was the
most erratic in the early dealings
touching 123 on a break and then
rallying to 127.
About mid-session, however,
business quieted down somewhat
with local shorts more inclined
to take profits and even up for
the start of 1923. A consider
able amount of export business
was reported done' in Manitobas
with confirmation of sales of
240,000.
Corn and oats showed stubborn
resistance to pressure and while
lower . early, displayed strong
rallying power later.
Provisions were 'rather dull,
but were affected somewhat by
the strength id hogs.
