BETTER
Gains in Active Shares
Range from One to Seven
Points on Exchange
NEW YORK, Nov. 28. Stock
price took a decided turn for
the better In today's dealings,
gains in active shares, ranging
from 1 to nearly ? points.
Much of the Impetus for the
rise was furnished, by bear op-
! operators, who wished to rema n
covered over the holiday and by
the renewed activity of pools
which had ceased to function
during the reaction which had
spread over the better part of
five weeks. The rapidity of the
advance indicated that the de
cline in some quarters had been
overdone.
Lower money rates, another.'
new high for sterling exchange,
a number of dividend resump
tions and increasoe, and the pub-
'licat'on of more favorable rail-
road October earnings reports all
helped to create a better atmos
phere, but it could hardly be
said that the upward course ot
prices was governed by any or
all of these.
With professional speculators
in control, prices ot lead have
moved in seeming disregard of
outa'de nM8 developments.
Standard Oil shares took a
prominent part in the advance.
New Jersey gaining 7 points and
California 3-8. Mexican Petro
leum, very little of which is out
standing, jumped 13 points on
a turnover of 150 share. Pan
American issues were strong, r's
ing mote than 5 points each.
United States Steel, got up as
high as 109 3-8 but reacted
later to 100 3-8, a net gain of
1 3-8. Independent steels gen
erally dragged behind the rest
of the list on the upturn al
though Bethlehem B and Cruci
ble closed at least a point h'gh
er. Equipments made good re
covery.
Persistent, but unconfirmed re
ports that New York Central
will be placed on a 7 per cent
basis next month resulted in
some good buying of that stock,
which closed at 92 1-4, up 5-8.
Moderate strength" also developed
in a number of other rail shares.
Sugars were strong, be'ng
helped by higher prices for the
refined product. Sales totalled
978 000 shares.
Money rates were easier. Call
money opened at 4 1-2 and
eased off to 4. There was a
fairly active demand for time
money at 4 3-4 for all maturi
ties with a few scattered loans
being made on a five per cent
bas;s.
Foreign exchanges wree Irregu
lar. Demand sterling got as high
as 4.52 1-2, but reacted Just
under 4.52 later. French francs
sold as low as 6.95. Canadian
exchange was again at par.

ON WHEAT MARKET
Export Business on Large
Scale Indicated in Yes
terday's Dealings
CHICAGO, Nov. 28. Indica
tions of export business on a
large scale had a decided bull
ish effect on the wheat market
today. Prices closed strong. 1
7-8 to 2 7-8 net higher, with
May 1.16 to 1.J6 1-8 and July
1.07 5-8 to 1.07 34. Corn ga'n
ed 1 1-2 to 2 1-8 cents, and
oats 3-4 to 1 and 1 1-8. In pro
visions the outcome varied from
2 cents declineto a like advance
Fore'gn purchasing ' orders,
which in some quarters were as
sociated with French plans to
seize the Ruhr reg'on, gave the
whenat market a softening ten
dency the moment trading began,
and this tendency afterward re
ceived more and more momen
tum, the close being at almost
the top figures of the day. In
th's connection, it was said a
leading speculator on the bear
d'de had abandoned his position
and had bought heavily in order
to even un his accounts.
Meanwhile, estimates were cur
rent that Europe had taken more
than 1.500.000 bushels today in
addition to 3,000,000 bushels the
day before.
Bulls centended that naviga
tion on the St. Lawrence would
end within a week, and that to
tal stocks of bonded and domee
t'c wheat at the Atlantis sea
board and Gulf of Mexico and
at Buffalo and on the lakes
would be equal to only a cou
ple of weeks requirements for
jEurope. Unexpected firmness ot
Liverpool quotations, heavy rains
in Argentine and the fact that
this was a traditional calendar
date to buy wheat, all helped
to stimulate the advance and so
too did a new reduction la the
