With the United States visible supply show ing an increase and with wheat being sold to go into storage here, the wheat market had a down ward tendency most of the time today. Prices closed unsettled, half to 1 1-2 net lower, with May 1.13 3-4 to 1.13 7-8 and July 1.05 5-8 to 1 05 3-4. Corn fin ished 1-4 3-8 off to a shade advance, oats at 3-8 1-2 off to a rise of a shade, and provis ions varying from five cents low er to a gain of 65 cents. Weakness in wheat values was evident at the outset, immediate bearish factors being lower quo tations from Liverpool and en larged domestic receipts. Besides, offerings from Argentina to Eur ope was said to be on the in crease and the Argentina harvest was represented as making good progress. Indications, however, that some new export business for that country had developed brought about a transient upturn in prices. enlargement of the United States visible surplus was unex pected by a majority of wheat traders, and near the end of the day was effective in disturbing the confidence of numerous hold ers. No notice was taken of a de crease in the Canadian visible supply, the falling off being more than offset by the . gain in ' the bonded stock of Canadian wheat in the United States. Corn And oats were ocarishlj D01ID BEND IN WHEAT PRICE C SUPPORT FOUND LACKIriS Bear Selling Further Induced in Yesterday's StocK Market Activity NEW YORK, Nov. 2T. Con tinued lack of public support in duced further bear selling in to day's stock market, several rep resentative shares touching nea lows on the current reaction. Indications of heavy selling by disappointed pools were apparent during the day and there were reports of forced liquidation through out of town banks, par ticularly in Boston and Philadel phia. Prices moved with seeming dis regard of outside news develop ments. which in the main were favorable. Call money, which opened at 4 3-4, eased off to 4 per cent, while a slightly easier tendency was noted in the time money market. Demand Sterling got up to $4.52, the highest price since 1919. Publication of ad ditional October earning state ments resulted in a more fav orable general showing than was expected when the first reports came out. , f Opening prices to4ay (were spotty, short covering in a num ber of representative shares giv ing the appearance of strengthen ing. Independent , steels were among the first to rU way and then pressure was rMiered on Studebaker nnd Baldwin, the for mer getting down to 1144 but rallying fa ter to 116, and the lat ter sinking to 113 V,' and then moving up to 115. Heavy buying of California Petroleum, which was pushed up nearly four points, accompanied rumors of its closer affiliation with Standard Oil of California, which Improved fractionally oh the day. Ralls were hit hard during the early part of the reac tion but most of the standard shares made good recovery, a few closing fractionally above Satur day's final figures. Sales totalled 1.136.000 shares. Sterling's advance to a new high record was the feature of the foreign exchange market, heavy buying being reported in London, Paris and this center. affected by wheat hut llsplayed rather stubborn resistance. Some reports current indicated active demand from the west and south' west was at a higher mark than prices ' quoted here. For the most part, provisions lacked support, the chief excep tions being November and Decem ber lard, which were bid up sharply.
