Pool Operations in Special

Have Influence
NEW YORK, Nov. 20. Pool
operations iu specialties combined
with short covering in other quar
ters where the supply of stocks
at current prices apparently was
scarce, gave the stock market an
appearance of strength during th
greater part of today's relatively
dull session.
Interest of the financial com
munity was centered principally
on the Strength of foreign ex
changes, demand sterling Jumping
nearly two points to $4.49, or
less than 2 cents below the high
iccord reached last June. French
franca, which registered their low
of the year, $6.17 only two weeks
ago, were quoted at $7.41 anl
similar improvement was noted la
Belgian, Italian and most of the
other European rates. Even Ger
man marks advanced slightly to
Vi cents a hundred, despite an
increase of 65,000,000 marks in
note circulation shown in the
weekly statement of the reichs
bank. Independent steels, pnblic util
ities and sugars were the out
standing industrial shares. Trad
ing in railroad stocks was quiet,
their neglect being attributed to
the possibility of unfavorable leg
islation in congress.
Total sales of shares were 586,

Call money opened an,d renew

Big Estimate of Argentine
Exportable Surplus Sends
Market Down
CHICAGO, Nov. 20. Material
setbacks in the price of wheat to
day resulted largely from a big
new estimate of the Argentfne
exportable surplus, and from out
spoken bearish views expressed
by a prominent Chicago trader.
The market closed unsettled 1 to
2 cents net lower with December
$1.18 3-4 to $1.18 7-8 and May
$1.16 3-4 to $1.16 7-8. Corn
lost 3-4 to 7-8 1 cent and oata
half to 7-8 P 1 cent. In provis
ions the outcome was unchanged
to ten cents down.
Despite some initial appear
ance of strength due to upturns
in Liverpol quotations the wheat
market here gave evidence soon
that fresh buying power was of
insufficient volume to withstand
heavy selling. Shortly after the
opening. May touched a new high
price record for the season, but
during the rest of the day the
bulls were at a decided disad
vantage. It was figured that Ar
gentina would be able to export
17,000,000 bushels more than
heretofore has been estimated. In
addition the amount of wheat on
3cean passage as compared with
t week before showed an increase
ot 3,500,000 . Reports that Great
Britain and France were to press
Germany for reparations counted
as a further handicap of friends
t higher prices', and bo likewise
lid gossip that the car supply had
improved, especially in the north
west. Corn and oats receded with
wheat. Corn receipts were heav
ier and it was asserted that ex
port corn at the seaboard was
accumulating to a burdensome
degree. ,
Lower quotations on hog val
ues weakened the provision mar

REVELATIONS OF A WIFE
CHAPTER 1S
Ttif Way Irfky Took Madge's
AdTtre?
I was Jfiercey resentful and
humiliated at I walked by Hugh
Orantland's side to the tree be
neath which were grouped Dicky,
Edith Fairfax and a number of
the younger Paige cousins. '
I have always prided myself
upon never betraying in public by
word or gesture, any Jealousy of
Dicky, no matter how impressive
may be his attention to some
other woman. This errand upon
which I was bent at Hugh Grant
land's request savored altogether
too much of the Jealous-wife-re-
moving-husband-from-rlvaPs-vicin-
ity, to my notion. But one look
at Dr. Jim Paige, who stood alone
a short distance off, pretending to
be busy in piling dogwood boughs
together, but in reality, as I quick
ly saw, watching Dicky and Ed
ith Intently from beneath frown
ing brows, made me quicken my
steps and forget my resentment
in apprehension.
As we came up, Dicky hailed
us. and I thought I detected a
note of mockery in his call.
"You're Just in time," he said
"We've decided to have a May
pole dance right here. Ol course,
it isn't May yet, but as I under
stand It. May down here ts what
our August is, or something like
that. At any rate, it's May
weather when the dogwood blos
soms are out, according to 'my
reckoning, so we're going to cel
ebrate. Edith
queen of the
is going to be thej116' M;" May 115 j.,.
May. Won't she) . ' ;
make a good one?"
A Menacing Situation.
His clever artist's hands had
been busy as he spoke with some
sprays of the pink and white
blossoms, and as he finished he
deftly tossed on Edith's dark hair
a cunningly fashioned crown.'
Then he dropped on one knee be
fore her, and seised her hand.
"First of all try majesty's loyal
subjects, I salute thee!" he said,
bent his head as if to kiss her
hand.
The . younger Paige cousins
clapped their hands and laughed
merrily at the little outburst, but
I, watching Edith Fairfax curi
ously, saw that she did not even
smile. With a queer little reac
tion at my heart, I realised that
though the touch of Dicky's "lips
upon' her hand would be some
thing Infinitely prised by her, yet
she was annoyed and resentful at
this public exhibition. That she
also shared iHugh Orantland's
knowledge of Dr. Jim Paige's
hair-trigger temper I guessed
from the quick, furtive glance
she shot at him, even as she
quickly and deftly snatched her
hand from Dicky's grasp before
his lips had reached it.
"Don't be absurd, Dicky," she
said almost pettishly, then she
turned with a little air as of re
lief to me.
Dicky's Mockery.
"Madge, will you take this wild
youngster of yours in hand?" she
asked prettily. "He acts as if he
were a performing bear just let
loose from a cage."
"That's what I came over for,"
I replied, demurely, 'although in
wardly I raged at the covert im
plication whether meant or not
I had no means of knowing that
I was. the jailer, our marital life
the cage from which Dicky had
escaped for a little while. "Major
Grantland and I have been con
sulting our watches, and beg to
inform you that If we mean to
g'et these blossoms home in time
for Leila gjo be married today it
behooves us to hasten. Of course,
if you think the ceremony can
be postponed "
I stopped and looked around,
smiling a bit maliciously while
the members of tbe little group
looked at their own watches,
caught their respective breaths,
and rushed to the wagon with the
last boughs they had been gath
ering. I saw Major Grantland
adroitly slip to Edith's side, and
pick up the pile of blossoms near
her before Dicky, who was still
looking In astonishment at hia
watch, could forestall 'him. At
the same instant I tucked my hand
under my husband's arm.
"Come over here quickly and
help me get my pile up." I com
manded in half-coaxing, half
mandatory, w!fe!y fashion, but
when we were safely out of ear
shot of the others I dropped the
coaxing tone and spoke as one
man or one woman to another.
"Yon called me to account the
other day," I began quietly but
measuredly, "And I think I took
it good naturedly; in fact, I don't
mind telling you that I'm quite
grateful for it. Now it's my turn
and I'm not going to mince words
a boat It. I don't think you're
playing fair either with Jim Paige
or -or Edith by a performance
Buch as you have been giving this
morning."
Dicky stared at me as if I were
someone he had never seen be
fore. In fact, he never had seen
me In just this mood. Never," in
our, lives together, had I openly
referred to any attention be bad
given anothef woman. And tetgSZfc1921 m l
