Important Headway
NEW YORK, Nov. 17. Spec
I'lators for the decline resumed
their operations at the begin
n'ng of today's stock market
hut were unable to make much
headway ' except in a few inde
indent steels, public utility
rubber, low priced rail and oil
.hares, fluctuations being within
narrower limits. The general
list showed better resistance to
pressure, and while trading was
not very extensive, closing price
were mainly higher.
Two factors which have in
fluenpod recent selling were It
luidation through brokerage
houses desiring to make a fav
arable showing on the stock ex
ebangie questionnaire asking
their pos'tion on the market
and so-called "taxation selling
which usually makes its appear
ance at this time and continues
'o the end of the year. The
manner in which a number of
stocks recovered indicated that
the market was over-sold in
spots.
Dividend paying railroad
shares generally showed frac
tional gains. Deterioration ot
the regular dividend by Pacific
oil, which previously was re
ported to be in danger, failed to
b'd up the stock. Changes in
other oils were mixed.

CHICAGO, Not. 17.
tent commisison bouse buying
gave aa upward slant to grain
prices today despite substantial
enlargement of the Argentine
visible supply of wheat and of
the estimated wheat yield in
Australia. Wheat here closed
firm, 5-8 to 1 1-S cent net high
er, with December 1.20 1-4 to
1.20 3-8 and May 1.17 1-2 to
1.17 5-8. Corn finished un
changed to half cent higher and
oats up 1-4 to 1-2. In provis
ions, the outcome Taried from
the sajne as yesterday's finish to
12 cents off.
Houses with seaboard connec
tions led the buying of wheat,
and this circumstance, together
with higher quotations at LiTer-
pool, lent signiicance to the re
port that of all the wheat grow
ing areas in the world. Europe
has had the most satisfactory
yield this season. Another bul
lish factor was word from
Omaha that eTery offer of corn
and oats to the west was ac
cepted over night at the highest
prices yet this season. Ener
getic domestic milling demand
tended also to encouage bullish
sentiment.
Only transient easing up of
tne wheat market followed an
nouncement that Australia's ex
portable surplus would be 20,
000,000 to 30,000.000 bushelH
more than looked for, and that
the Argentine visible supply , had
increased 1,000,000 bushels dur
ing the last week. In the face
of these bearish advices, com
misison houses continued to buy
and the market closed at . about
the top figures of the day.
Corn received active support
notwithstanding heavy profit
taking sales.
weasness ol nog values un

moved up a point to. 104 3-8, but
some of the independent steels
were weak. Bethlehem "A
sold off narly four points on a
turnover of 300 shares and the
B' declined a quarter while
Lackawana, Midvale and Van
adium sold off small fractions to
one point. Gulf States Steel
moved up nearly 2 points.
Total sales were 926,000
shares.
Call money opened at 4 1-2
per cent, dropped to four before
noon, and then to 3 3-4, the low
est rate since September 18
when it closed at 3 1-2 per cent
Time money continued on a five
per cent basis and commercial
paper at 4 3-4.
Sharp recoveries took place In
foreign exchange, demand ster
ling getting just below 4.48 and
franc checks crossing 7 cents for
the first time in two weeks.
