WHEAT MARKET IE Li Prospective Sharp Competi tion from Argentine ana Canada is Cause CHICAGO, Nov, 9. Prospects of the sharpest competition of the season from Canada and Argen tina during the next few weeks did a good deal today to make the wheat market here average lower. Prices closed unsettled at 3-4 net decline to 1 1-8 advance, with December 1.15 1-8 to 1.15 1-4 and May 1.14 3-8 to 1.14 1-2. Corn finished 1-8 to 3-8 off. and oats varying from 1-8 a 1-4 lower to 1-8 gain. In provisions the outcome ranged, from five cents setback to a rise of ten cents. Signs multiplied that Canada would use all of her endeavors to move as much as possible of her big wheat crop Into consumptive channels before navigation closes, and it also waa apparent that Ar gentina was beginning a strenu ous effort to fJnd a place for her expected huge surplus. Argen tina was reported as having sold new wheat to Italy within the last few days at a level below current values both in Canada and the United States. With " Liverpool quotations showing a material drop and with domestic primary receipts contin uing heavy, the wheat market here opened with a downward I tendency and at no time succeed ed in getting more than a small fraction above yesterday's closing figures. Aggressive selling of corn took place, but the offerings were well absorbed, largely by houses with eastern connections, not withstanding word of heavy ex ports from Argentina. President Roy F. Clark of the Western Canners association this after noon predicted there would be nc lowering of production costs in the canning industry during th 1923 season. "aoing Business witnoui a jiiuiiw 6 ran N URGES EEK ASPHALT ii sip era Gains Made in Early Part of Session Wiped Out by Liquidation NEW YORK. Nov. 9 Wide spread liquidation in the final hour of today's stock market, pre cipitated by a sharp break in Gen eral Asphalt issues, wiped out the fairly substantial gains made in the earlier part of the session and caused loss-, of one to two points in a number of active shares. Publication of an encouraging resume of business conditions by the federal reserve bank, higher foreign exchange rates and an ac tive resumption of pool activity In special stock brought a pood volume of baying orders into the market during the morning, early gains ranging from one to nearly five points. Short covering also was an Im portant factor, some good gains being made by domestic oils, shipping, rubber and tire stocks. These gains were cancelled, how ever. In the final reaction. Independent Steel shares were hit rather hard in the final selling. Gulf States Steel dropping 2 58 points below last night's close; Crucible two and Republic and Mid vale one each. United States Steel common, which was within a point of its year's high record this afternoon, . cancelled its mark and dropped a point below yesterday's final figures. Equip ments also proved a vulnerable t'arget. Mexican Petroleum .the conver sion privilege in which expired last night, was considerably less active today, gaining four points on a turnover of leas than 1.200 shares. - At the company's offices It. waa announced that 72,54u shares had been converted for pan-American "B" stock, leaving only 43,000 shares in the hands of the public. Total sales were 1.008,000 shares. Call money held steady at five per cent throughout the session Time. money rates continued firm with trading quiet. A much stronger tone prevailed in today's foreign, exchange mar ket. Sterling rates improved f ran tionally despite a rather heavy offering of grain and cotton bills, French, Italian and Belgian re mittances, particularly the two latter, made good recovery from yesterday's pronounced weakness REALTY EXCHANGES Reported by Union Abstract Company ; , - F.
