pay, and finally put it up in the
court's hands, but the right to
collect the bill was claimed by E.

The new steam heating system
at Chemawa was opened for bus'

$65,000. Superintendent Haf
wood Hall, speaking yesterday of
the plant, said that it was be

school building of the
group, and heats them uniformly
and well. The saving in the cost
of operation will almost pay for
the plant in two years, besides
the saving of time and dirt, and
the far greater comfort to every
body. The smoke stack for the
new system is 135 feet high

Washington Prison Sends
Auto Plates to Dibble

-More than 100,000 pairs
of
automobile license plates have
been shipped to Fred J. Dibble, di
rector of licenses at Olympia from
the state penitentiary, it was an
nounced today by prison officials.
Approximately 214,000 more
plates are to be made, it was said
Information was also given that
13 cows have been added to the
penitentiary herd from tnt gov
ernor's foundation herd, end two
registered cows from the recent
sale at Garfield. All the animals
are Holsteins.
Bonus Money Distributed
Among St. Louis Browns
ST. LOUIS. Mo., Nov. 1. A
ump bonus of ?20, 000 . was dis
tributed to the members of the St.
Louis Browns shortly before the
end of the "season by Phillip de
Catsby Ball, president of the club,
as a reward for the team's best
performance in twenty years, it
was learned tonight.
President Ball is understood to
have given his players a bonus of
$5,000 during the middle of the
season, when they forged into the
American league lead, making a
total of $25,000 presented in bon
uses by the present owners.

Gasoline sales In Oregon dur
ing the month of September show
ed an increase of. about 21 per;
cent over those of me same month
in 1921, says a statement made
yesterday by Sam A. Kosef. sec
retary of state. The decWne as
compared with August, 1922. was
only about 4 12 per cent. Dis
tillate sales aggregating 210.229
gallons showed a decline of 1?.2.-
4 31.5 gallons from the total ofL
the previous month.
The tax paid to thQ state on
the September pales amounts to
$132,149.55. Of this sum $65.
549.03 was produced by the law
of 1919 which provides for a rate
of 1 cent per gallon on gasoline
and one-ihalf cent per gallon on
distillate. The additional tax of
1921 providing for a uniform rate
of 1 cent a gallon on all kinds
of motor vehicle fuels, returned
the sum of $66,600.52.
Up to the present time the op
eration of the motor . vehicle
fuels tax laws has brought to the
state treasury the total sum of
$2,702,259.17.

the law of 1021. the sum of $37.-
021.61 has been returned to ap-
