NEW YORK, Aug. Conr

in today's relatively dull, stock

in narrow limits.
General uncertainty regarding
the railroad .strike situation was
more than offset by the govern

and Canadian Pacific's, Great
Northern and Chicago and North
western, and Per Marquette,
closed generally at gains, of 1 to
nearly 2 points .after an early dis
play ot weakness, Cuban, sugar
stocks were reactionary as a re

proved trade conditions. There
wits a good inquiry also for pub
lic utilities, Peaples Gas, - North
American and Fhjladelphlna com
panies reaching new high records.
Total sales were 575,000 shares.
Call money opened at. 3 1-2 per
cent, but hardened to four and
thence to 4 1-2 when banks began
calling loans, coincident, with
heavy withdrawals of government
deposits. Some 'small lots were
loaned out on call as high as. five
percent. Timo money was scarce
with no important changes In
rates;
Business In foreign exchange
was restricted : because of cable
congestion, due to the cutting, of
nine of the 12 cables by Irish In

steady, but French and eBlgian
francs were, down about tno
points. German marks also were

HOW INDUX CHIEFS

Charles Carter, the Indian con

members of the House of 'Repre

concerning Indians, or to give in
formation concerning the' customs
arid habits ot the first families ot
America: ' Recently he was asked,
tor instance, how those two fam
ous chiefs, "Sitting- Bull' and
"Rain-In-the-Face" happened to
receive such odd names: He ex
plained that Sitting Bull was thus
characterized in the days of his
youth on account of an amusing
tissle he had with a bull buffalo.
He wounded" an animal In the
hind quarters so that It was: left
in a sitting position. It. could
not get up and it would not lie
down and die as "desired. The
young Indian, much to the delight
of his older compainons, leaped
from his pony and grabbed the
animal by the horns like a wrest
ler and tried to throw him to the
ground. Ever thereafter, as long
as he lived, he was known as Sit
ting Bull.
"Rain-In-the-Face" received his
title when he was a wee baby
strapped to a board. His mother
stood baby and board against the
outside of the teepee while she
was busy on the 'inside. In ths
meantime a gentle spring: shower
came up. Hearlng baby laughter
the mother stepped ontside to saa
what was so amusing to her young
gently glowing against his face
which seemed to be a source of
great Joy to him, From that dajr
on he was sailed' Raln-In-the Face.
