Trading on Stock Exchange
Yesterday Still reels
Influence
NEW YORK, June 21. Trad
ing on the stock exchange today
continued to be influenced, if not
altogether governed by the extra
ordinary movements of several
speculative favorites. Chief am
ong these were Mexican rctrol
eura and Studebaker, both scor
inr new high- records for the year
on very large transactions.
T?xican Petroleum, after a ser
ies of bewildering advances and
reactions, established a maximum
of 179, from which it rriade an
abrupt descent of 8 points but
rallicl to 175, a net gain of 3 1-2
points or a total of slightly more
than 30 points so far this wee's.
Studebaker's course within lim
ited bounds was even more con
fusing, making a perpendicular
decline of about 56 points in the
f'nal hour when the market was
mr-st unsettled and closing at a
loss of 2 3-8 points as against its
early gain of almost that much.
Other foreign and domestic oils
were better by 2 to 4 points, but
these were plainly affected by the
reactionary movements of their
leader.
In the irregular advance of the
early and intermediate periods,
several of the independent steels,
equipments and motor accessor
ies were lifted to new high levels
for the current movement. Minor
rails, sugars, textiles, leathers
and metals rose 1 to 3 points but
eased in the closing reversals.
Sales amounted to 1,075,000
shares.
Altogether the market's course
indicated that its recent upswing
was mainly traceable to the exist
ence of a short interest of large
proportions and confirmed the
opinion of impartial observers
that substantial public participa
tion was lacking.
Call money opened at 2 3-4 per
cent, repeating the recent mini
mum quotation for such accom
modations, this being the lowest
in almost five years. The three
per cent rate of the last half
hour seemed to be prompted by
tomorrow's withdrawals from lo
cal reserve banks of 816,000,000
to meet treasury payments.
Sterling eased more than one
cent, French, Italian and Belgian
bills fell four to ten points and
German marks reacted moderate
ly.

Threshing Returns from
West and Southwest May
Prove Disappointing r
CHICAGO), June 21. Predic
tions that threshing returns from
the domestic winter crop south
west and west would prove disap
pointing, counted to sobe extent
as a bullish factor in the wheat
market today, especially during
the last hour. Prices closed un
settled, at the same as yesterday's
finish to c higher, with July.
81.13 to $1.134, and Septem
ber I1.13H to $1.13.
Corn gained half to one cent,
and oats half to three quarter
cent.
In provisions the outcome var
ied from unchanged figures to 5c
advance.
Bulls in the wheat market were
prompt to take advantage of the
circumstances that late reports re
garding winter wheat had become
less optmistic and that uncertain
ty as to quality and yield appear
ed to be Increasing. On the bugle
in values, country offerings here
to arrive, broadened out and pur
chases were the largest so far
this season, causing something of
a reaction near the finish.
Rains in the Canadian north
west, together with generally cool
er weather elsewhere, counter
balanced in the first part of the
day the effect of higher Llver-J
pool quotations. Lessened appre
hension as to the likelihood of
drought in Canada led to over
selling, though, on the part of pit
traders, and left them defense
uess against concentrated specu
lative buying which later devel
oped. .
Corn and oats showed Indepen
dent strength, a great deal of
buying being based on theory in
the corn trade that the price of
corn generally moves up about
this time.
Provisions averaged a little
higher, in line with the hog mar
ket. FRUIT
