Sherlock Holmes, the sagac

to the extent that he knows 50
objects by name and understands
300 words. Sherlock Is the pro

Thirty-eighth street. New York
City, and before being placed in
motion pictures- nppeared for
three seasons In vaudeville.
The owner insists that Sher

ricks and stunts. guided only by
mental teldpathjL This theory
was recently put to a test when
the dog appeared before an Inter
ested audience at the Fox studios
on West FIfty-flth street When
asked to give or barkthe to
tal ot any number on a calendar
ranging from one to ten, the dog
invariably looked at his question

number.But when a finger was
pointed at a cipher, Sherlock re
fused, to bark. i's,- - ; ,? '
There were those In - the aud

to the mental . telepathy claim.

Hall Issue Statement
Claiming a lead of 1971 votes
throughout the state for Hall., his
Portland headquarters late last
night issued a statement claim
complete returns from all but
five counties in thte state.
These counties are Malhunr.
Gilliam, Harney, Jefferson - and
Grant, where it is reported 'many
eastern Oregon precincts have
been slow In making returns. ,.
Hall's friends at. the Portland
office last night claimed that he
would defeat Olcott Olcott by at
least 500 votes. They conceded
that' the Coos Bay man would
probably lose votes in each of
the missing counties, .but asserted
that thtla would be protected by
the 1971 plurality he had gained
in other precincts.'

The decision to issue the com
