MILLINERY
CLASSES ARE
MOST POPULAR
More than 40,000 women were
in attendance last year at part
time classes in home economics
where the instructors were paid
in part by the federal funds, ac
cording to Miss Genevieve Fisher,
supervisor of home economics for
the federal board of vocational ed
ucation from Washington, D. C,
who visited three of Salem's part
time classes yesterday while here.
The classes maintained through
combined federal and state funds
under th provisions of the Smith-
Hughes act are taking sewing,
dressmaking, millinery, bouse
decoration, house furnishings,
housewifery, nutrition and food
values and preparation, Miss
Fisher said.
"Millinery is popular among the
women, sewing perhaps, comes
next in interest. Foods and their
preparation seem last to interest
the women. Perhaps this is be
cause women know that they "do
not know anything about hats and
sometimes not much about cloth
ing problems but they feel that
they know how to prepare foods.
"Perhaps women do know these
things yet it is a fact that every
day we find that children coming
from some of the bst homes,
where there is no doubt of their
having plenty of food, are under
nourished. We know that they
are not getting the right food and
It Is this we are trying to bring
to the women, just what to give
the family to eat.
Miss Fisher sajs that in her
work with the federal board of
vocational education has taken
her in the last three years into
every state In the union except
Florida and everywhere there is
th9 growing interest among the
women in the part time classes.
It Is two years since she visited
Oregon, Miss Fisher says and at
that time there was not one cen
ter of part time Instruction while
now there are six.
Miss Bertha Davis, state super
visor in home economics lor Ore
gon was here yesterday and ac
companied Miss Fisher to the vari
ous classes visited yesterday. Sa
lem Heights was visited twice,
since they have two classes on
Tuesday.
"Tell your friends about th
work you have had here if you
like it," was the request made by
Miss Davis last night when she
spoke for a few minutes to the
class in millinery at the Red Cross
rooms.
Both Miss Davis and Miss Fish
er spoke in particular of the good
work done in the Salem center by
Mrs. F. E. Barker, who has
charge of both the sewing and
millinery.
Miss Fisher left last night for
Portland from where she will go
on to Spokane to be in attendance
at the state home economics convention.
