MARKET
ES
Threatened Miners' Strike
and Hardening of Money
Rates Cause
NEW YORK. March 22. The
threatened strike of the coal min
ers an more pronounced harden
ing of money rates combined to
bring bon further Irremlarity
and occasional heaviness of stock
market values today. Coalers de
clined one to two points and other
rails were similarly depressed on
reports that a concerted move
ment is under way to force a re
duction of freight rates by 'the in
terstate commerce commission.
These adverse developments
were balanced in part by encour
aging reviews of conditions in
the iron and steel industry, as
suggested by an advance of prices
by one of the chief subsidartes of
the United States Steel corpora
tion. Movements in the popular in
dtistrials and miscellaneous ;
groups were unusually contracted

Announcement of the cot in the
Northern Pacific dividend from a
7 to 5 per cent basis was made
soon after the close of the mar
ket. Call money opend a-.ul re
newed at 4 per cent, but the in
quiry from brokerage houses
caused the rate to rise lo 5 per
cent at mid day and to 5 1-2 per
cent in the final hour. Reduced
offerings were attributed to the
drawing down of local reserves by
interior banks.
Dealings in foreign exchanges
expanded considerably and for the
most part to the advantage of Eu
ropean centers. Sterliitg rose
11-2 cents over yesterday's low
and allied remittances were 3 to
10 points higher. Swiss, Scandi
navian and .Spanish bills also
strengthened but the German
mark continued to weaken.

$1.36 to $1.3 and July at
I1.19Vi to $1.19. Corn gained
7-8 to 1 1-S. and oats 1-8 to V4.
In provisions there was a set
back rang'ng from 7 'A to 90c.
Scantiness of receipts, with
persistent commission house buy

Humane Officers Assert
That Qual is Songbird
ST. PAUL, Minn.. March 1.
Quail are songbirds, according to
the executive committee of the
state humane society, maintaining
that they are also allies of farm
ers. resolutions adopted by the
committee urge thst all farmers
of the states they inhabit be
asked to feed and care for them.
It la asserted that the work. and
the small amount of grata thus
expended would be abundantly
repaid in the destruction of In
sect rests and the seeds of box-
! ious weeds.
The resolution also propose
that quail shooting be prohibited
indefinitely. Without such pro
tection the birds are in danger
of extermination, says 8am F.
Fullerton. executive agent of th
society. The society wants quail
shooting stopped for a generation
at least, he adds. Although there
is now a closed season on quail
in this state it will soon expire.
