Chambers returned yesterday from Portland where they closed up their Port land home and are now fully set tied in St. Paul's rectory. Merle R. Chessman, editor of the Astoria Budget, was in Salem a few hours yesterday on his way to Eugene to attend a fraternity initiation. He was graduated from the state university in 1909. A. M. Crawford, former attor ney general, was here yesterday from Portland. ' J.- N. Helgerson, district attor ney of Polk county, was in the city yesterday attending to legal matters. F. Troxell and wife left yester day over the Oregon Electric for Centralla. Mrs. A. J. Hastings left yester day for Seattle. George A. White, adjutant gen eral of Oregon, was slightly ill yesterday and was confined at his home. For the benefit of the good housekeeper, the following ideas as suggested by one of the lead ing grocerymen of the city will be of special interet.;: Flour is thought to be due for an advance of 20 cents a barrel. Splnnach may be rather scarce in the spring. Th's is the opin ion sent out by jobbers, the short age being due to the freesing weather recently m southern Cal ifornia. The dried fruit market is short in apricots. It is reported that heavy shipments were made to Germany and that a large part of the California crop was bought. Already the wholesale price of apricots is up 7 cents a pound. Stocks of canned tomatoes are rather low and an advance may be looked for until the new crop Is in. This shortage is due to the small amount canned last year. Rice and beans are getting scarce, in the market. There has during the past 30 days been an advance wholesale of from 1 to 1 M cents a pound on each. Cooking fats are down, and getting back to the pre-war price. On account of the low price of corn, all corn syrups are now down to the 1914 price, and corn starch is now sold at the price of before the war. There' is some uncertainty as to what the freeze in southern California did to the lemon and orange crops and as yet there has been no material advance in the retail price. No lished. mking H.
