' ' 1 1 -"'J J--' Used Cars The very latest development in! the automobile industry is" the use of a real aeroplane engine in a cari The effect of this can be readily imagined by all who have seen the enormous speed and flexibility of the! aeroplane as it dips and loops and tail-spins with more grace and speed than its feathered competitors of the sky. . The aeroplane automobile engine is lighter, cooler and much more durable than any other type. It enjdys better lubrication, less carboniza tion and motor stresses are minimized almost to elimination through the use of forged steel cylinders as in the aeroplane proper. It also makes possible great fuel economy.! This is the wizard engine that in the Mercedes: six-cylinder stock chassis has won all of the races in which it has been entered: The International races at Prague, the Targa Flono cup races in Italy aiftj the Alpine races held over violent grades and under conditions almost; impossibly severe. A railroad section foreman out in Iowa operates a, "motor hand car" over his section of track that mar rightly be termed the hand car de luxe. Finding general dis satisfaction with the common type of railroad motor propelled ) handcar because of the strong winds and long, steel grades pre vailing in his section, he set oat to devise and build his ideal of a h railroad motor car. In the first place, a horizon tally opposed, twin cylinder mo torcycle engine was selected for the power plant because it per mitted building the frame of the car low. The engine is fitted with a three-speed transmission, giv ing a range of gears to suit prac tically any condition. The en gine is started with a simple pedal type starter and it is also equipped with an ignition light ing system. A storage battery and powerful spotlight were util ized for the lighting system. White oak lumber was used in the construction of the frame. and every part of the entire car wa made in the section foreman's little shop with : the exception of wheels and brakes, motor, head light and battery. On a recent trip of 51 miles with the new rail car, an average speed of 25 miles an hour was maintained, in spite of a strong head-on wind. Under the same conditions, the same trip would have required at Haynes and Ballantyne Sign Long-Term Contracts With Company Fred J.j Haynes, president, and John Ballantyne, treasurer, the key executives of , Dodge Broth ers, have just entered into an iron-clad contract with that com pany covering a long period of years. The announcement is in tended to set at rest at once and for all time thoughts that there is the slightest chance of a change in Dodge Brothers, either least one; hour more to make, with the old type vehicle. Even more recently, an average speed of 40 miles an hour was main tained for a distance of 72 miles. in ownership or j management. - ETer: since the passing of the founders. John F. and Horace E. One motorcycle factory alone reports routing mpre than 200 long distance motorcycle. tourists the past season- From the superintendent of Yellowstone national park it is learned that. 76 motorcycles, carrying 133 passen fcers, came over the Yellowstone trail during the summer months and stopped to visit the great play ground. And Yellowstone park it should be remembered Is only one of the hundreds of thorough fares frequented by tourists. Th reason tor the Increasing popularity of the motorcycle as a means of transportation on long distance tours, can be easily ac counted for. Not only Is a motor cycle lighter in weight and conse quently more easily handled than an automobile, but it is likewise more economical in the consump tion of oil aha gasoline. In addi tion, it has plenty of power to carry a fairly good sized amount of luggage and till surmount any obstacles that might be encoun tered in the way of bad road con ditions. The motorcycle sidecar outfit especially, is ideally silted tor this kind of touring. mi mmM m Be prepared for one of the biggest surprises that has been made in Automobile circles this year. SALEM NOV. 15 m Mora T ARE DEPENDENT Few of Them Know How to Remedy Simple Things About Automobiles How about tracing out trouble in the electrical circuits on your car; or-correcting the timing or the motor: or grinding the valves? Could you do these things if either were necessary in an emergency! Most garage men. and they are in position to know, believe that you are to be congratulated on your knowledge if you are one of the old fashioned few who can do any ot these things. The long and short of it seems to be that the substantial con struction of the. car and its parts, and the frequency of service sta tions makes all this "do it your self" knowledge superfluous. The up-to-date driver, instead of load ing up his memory with a mass ot details, remembers only a few 'tems of routine care things that ho must do to keep the car run ning smoothly and continuously. It is this sort of if formation that the industry has made popular. Hardly a day goes by in any ga rage or service station without their noting the effect of the ed ucational work that has been done by the accessory manufacturers and car builders during the past few years. The storage battery In particular has received an unusual amount of attention. The Willard Storage Battery company has found that the greatest part of their sales and service work is really educational in nature, they must teach the battery user how to take care of his battery.
