Grade Crossing Safety
Is Urged by Mr. Buchtel
The alarming frequency of fa
tal accidents at grade crossings
of highways and railroads in Or
egon has caused Fred G. Buchtel,
member of the public service com
mission, to address letters to all
county Judges of the state and to
the railroad companies requesting
their co-operation to tbe fullest
extent in elimination of danger.
One suggestion of Mr. Buchtel
is that the highways retain a
standard width of 16 feet of im
proved road at crossings, instead
of being narrowed down, as is
often done.
Care by road supervisors that
brush and other obstructions to
the view be kept out of the way,
hand a recommendation that tbe
railroads Tlag all crossings when
cars are spotted near them, are
other features of the letters. Mr.
Buchtel encloses a circular illus
trating and explaining the oper
ation of various types of warning
signals, a circular that was de
vised by hint more than a? year
ago and which carries the caption
"Make Every Day a Safety Day
