Mr. Compton is working the forces in the flax plant to the limit, pre paring the flax products for the market. That is all he can do; that ia what he must do, and in tends to do. The hope of all con cerned Is that there will briore long develop a market for the fiber,, at a reasonable price. In that case, the industry will work itself out, and pay the farmers for their flax which they delivered at harvest time.: It the market does not develop, the legislature will without doubt pay the farmers for the flax, for (which they hold the contracts of the state end the warehouse receipts of the peniten tiary authorities. The farmers will not lose. Nor the state, either -for there will finally be a market for the fibre, at prices thaf will at least pay the industry out, if not leave a profit. The state, of Oregon is not going to be a wel- cher. Superintendent Compton has no intention whatever of "laying down,' on the flax indus try, now or in the future. Just now, what all should pray for is a market fori the fibre at prices that will be remunerative. V North Dakota has at last come to its senses l and shaken off the blight of the!
