SALEM IS STILL Salem is still the hop center; the larjrcst primary hop market in the world, that is, the la ryes t buying market from fir8t hands Though the Oregon acreage i only about 50 per cent of normal, and it would not be wi.se for inexperienced nun to set out new yards in this district. However, there will likelv be hops grown in the Salem district for a verv loner time, arc many uses for hops, including the drug trade, the trade of the bakers for yeast, and the trade of the makers of mild nitxii, uriinv.-) - i - And the latter may persist and grow to uch an extent i 'as to make such a revival of the industrv as to call lor a. I largely increased acreage. Who knows? j And the foreign demand trict produces a hop of such quality as to guarantee a persi.sieni tan irmu ioiei;n num- . era of malt drinks of high quality tor the tuiet traic ai. over the world; and these manufacturers will always pay a good to a fancy price for considerable quantities of our Ore gon grown hops. This year, any way, hops will continue to le the kin of our crops, so far as high cash returns to the acre are con cerned at least for the supplies that will go forward under contract to English accounts. And this will le so next year and thfr year after, at least, till present contracts expire. So there will be distributed here in the channels of t ratio two to three or even four million dollars for the crop that Is coming on, which gives every promise at this tinfb of ihowing good yields of excellent quality. The articles and interviews printed on the Salem Slo ran page, from the leading growers and dealers, should have ihe careful readingof every grower in this district. .There are vital messages carried in them, and no grower can afford to pas3 them by or to disregard the warnings and advice given. The Statesman said the maraschino men would come to the Salt-m district this year, if the emergency tariff bill passed. They are coming, evidently all of them, a fid. though at low prices, perhaps all the maraschino type cherries, that is, the Royal Anno type, at least, sill be taken. And thu the money for the primary 'stock of this trade will be diverted to the Salem district, and away from Italy and Spain, from which countries these cherries were firming duty free, undei a vicious interpretation of the Underwood tariff law. Now if the main tariff bill, when it is finally introduced, 'shall carry at least a G cent a pound duty on cherries, as it should in future years the maraschino manufacturers will have tc pay more than a living 'price for our cherries of the type the must have. If the bill, when it finally comes out, docs not carry a C cent duty, our growers must make Home howl in i vociferous demand for their rights. Now that the bootleg and moonshine cases are brine taken up again, in regular order, it is to be hoped that then will bo no hesitancy or failure on the part of our officers ii the due enforcement of the penalties oT the laws, according to thy rules of lustice and right. That is nothing more thar the whole people have a right to expect and demand.
