' , - - - 1 i I MY HI MID ! i HUSBAND A dele Garrison's New Thane Of REVELATIONS OF A WIFE CHAPTER 74 V?HAT MADGE SAW IN MR. STOCK BRIDGE'S OFFICE. '.; For a long moment Alice Hoi combe and I faced each other tensely, she insistent on the course she had outlined, 1 equally uetermiued against It. I was willing to go to malty lengths for Alice Holcombe, bat this propos t.cn to spy upon my principal's wife through a tran som was something 1 could not do. l was big enough, however, to see the Justice of her rtand point. It waajr duty, her privi lege to protect the man she loved from the crated maneuvers of his wife. But while I was perfectly willing to help her even to a point involving personal danger, I felt that I must refuse this thing she bad asked, nay commanded me o do. "Please don't be angry," i asked, "but I cannot watch Mrs. Stockbrldge when she doesn't know I am near her. I will, how ever, go down to the office t once and stay there until some one comes to relieve me." "Oh. will you!" Alice Hol combe's face registered relief and astonishment. "I didn't think j ought to ask you that for fear of the unpleasantness Millie might cause you if she became angered at your coming dowx She's not strong enough to hurt you, bui" she might tay some very horrid things. Oh, tiear!" her face fe!L "I had forgotten that the teacb era and children will be comlnj in. We mustn't risk a scene." 1 "We probably are risking a scene anyway," I said practically) "But you must decide quickly, t will go down to the office on som plausible pretext, of I will stay Iters." Y "Oh, go down by all means and at once," she said, and I saw tha she was having difficulty in con trolling her emotions. Why Madge Hesitated. .1 was not particularly calm my self, but fortunately my "single track mind'.', as Dicky terms It; enables me generally to put aside from my thoughts everything save the part'cular task which ia en grossing me. So without any more words I turned and went swiftly down the staircase to the door of the principal's office, which was closed, contrary to the usual cus tom of the -t-chool. I debated for a moment wheth er or not I should knock on taat closed door. Then , sty common sense asserted Itsei, and told md that Mrs. Stockbridge was the real intruder, and that either Miss Holcombe or I. as the principal's assistants, had the right to enter 'he office in bis absence at will. But my fingers were trembirng as 1 turned. the knob and swung back tbe door. MUly Stockbridge did not see or henr roe. and my trained eys had time to observe the setting In which her absorbed figure was framed. She was sitting at her bus- band's private desk, and the draw. era which he had always kept locked were wide open. A key. one of a bunch on a key ring, was 'named In the lock of the top one. while the principal's office coat, lying carelessly tumbled on the floor, was mute evidence of the manner In wh'ch Mrs. Stock bridge had secured the keys. Her husband, upon receiving the sum- mens to the neighboring v llage, must have forgotten to change the kevs with his coat, little thinking- that his wif9 would disobey the mandate which had kept her from that o'flce for so long. In her hand she held a large envelope on which was printed a caption in large letters: "Not to h on ath." Mllly Stockbridge'". hands screened the other letters, but 1 completed the sentence In rcy mind. "Not to be opened unt'J my death." knew that her randal fingers were tear 'ntr out from the Insensate paper the heart secrets of the man whose Hfo she had made one liv ing hell. "I'll Give You" It took all he courage I pos sessed to spf-ak. to draw hrr at; tent'on away from the paper shfl was "canning so greedily. I con? fens that 1 hld the door open withone hand as I uttered the irst vortls. for I had no idea what direction her anser would take. "Pardon me. Mrs. Stockbridge. I said wondering what in th world I would ssy next to her. ( did not have to ponder the queo tion long, for with a sound Ilk a snarl she wheeled In the chstr hen sprang to her feet, her hsnd$ crushing together the envelope and Its contents, among which t noticed some kodak pictures, th backs of which, however, wera turned toward me. , "Oh. it's vou. is It. you spy!'? nbi "creamed.
