In practically every sec'.ion oi the country negotiations , are under way whereby it la sought to re duce the wages of building labor fiom the peak. Generally, where reductions hare been made build ing is largely atimulated and it would seem that In two or three weeks the building labor situation hhould be well adjusted in prac tically all parts of the. country. Production of lumber continues upon a restricted basis and whilo orders placed are not up to nor mal, nevertheless they exceed ac- . tual production, taking the coun try as a whole. Shipments are coming forward promptly and the mills are taking care of rush or- ders in good shape. The demand ' is such that the volume of grades suitable for building shipped ex ceeds the volume produced and. consequently it is becoming diffi cult to place some orders which are badly mixed or which call for Items in the most demand. This condition is particularly notice able In the southern pine terri tory and as a consequence -eastern buyers are turning to the purchase cf Douglas fir In Spite of the very high freights which must be paid to get it into central vestern markets. In the matter of prices there has been frame tendency to firm up those for the lower grades, particularly in southern pine. Here and there may be noted a trend to reduce the prices of the better grades and this is due not to much to lack of demand as to a readjustment of the. rprvad In values between the different i grades. In normal times a wool -suit Is worth so much more than a cotton suit and thus the best grade cf lumber ia worth so much more than a lower grade ' when conditions are normal: When the heavy demand for lum ber arrived, however, tio natural , yread in price between grades was disrupted by tho fact that certain grades were In mvcY greater demand than others and as a consequence prices far the grades in most demand mounted -n-nch taster than those for fie i.ther grades. The natural spread . in t rices is now in process of ad lustment, a fact which must be taken into consideration in any study of present market condi tions.
