Kaiser Sells Ijand
Martin Kaiser, who lives near
Mt. Angel, sold about 51 acres of
land Tuesday to John Marner.
The selling price of the land was
$14,000, or about $273 an acre.
Watching' Kathleen 1'arlow and
listening to her music last night
at the armory made It easy to be
lieve that anyone could play the
violin. That Is the highwater
mark of art. Critics of every
country of the fclobe have ex
hausted all the scpcrlatlves that
the dictionary contains in review
ing her concerts, leaving little
that Is new or original to be said.
From the moment the tall, slen
der, auburn-haired figure ap
!eared on the armory stage until
her final appearance she had the
biz audience with her. an audi
ence that forgot time, place and
even the musician, so subtle was
her art. Mowing and fingering
through an arilsilc and well-balanced
program Miss Parlow
opened hew musical vistas te local j
mumc lovers. Mie piayed compo
sitions bv both old and new com
posers, compositions that are as
sociated especially with the vio
,1'n, but under her magic bow
they took on individuality, char
acter and revealed new beauties.
There were appealing qualities
In her playing-, technical perfec
tion, rare delicacy of tone and
bowing, and whenever called for
dynamic forcefulness.
M's Parlow played always
with the Authority and under
standing of the finished musician.
One moment her v'olin whispered
l a tender questioning, and in
the next, tones swelled forth In
power and fullness. One moment
her playing was the essence of
poetic delicacy, again It revealed
depth and bigness of the tempera
ment of the moment.
At the end of the Concerto In
n Minor, appreciation took the
form of a lovely cluster of Oregon
rorlng flowers, a gift that brought
the artist smiling and bowing to
the front of the stare. In re
sponse to prolonged applause fol
lowing other numbers Miss Par
low graciously reappeared giving
several extra compositions, among
which were Paderwskl's Minuet
and "Drink to Me Only JkVitb
Thine Eyes."
And writing of Parlow it would
not be consistent to pass over the
work of Fred Meisoin Gee. who
as the violinist's accompanist.
lent the most splendid support
at the piano. He revealed true
artistic feeling and furnished at
all times the efficient support ex
pected of him.
