Warning that -the passage or the
Fordney emergency tariff would
lead to retaliatory measures and
would breed unfriendliness to
ward American - trade among, for
eign nations, was given today: by
witnesses before the senate t fi
nance committee.- - . - - : .
As a result of the testimony. 11
was expected tonight that mem
bers of the I'nlted State tariff
commission, would be asked for
Information. Chairman -Penrose
said members of the commission
would be on hand tomorrow to
answer any questions."
The committee will conclude It
hearings tomorrow. Senator -Pen
rose announced, and it fs planned
on Friday to take up the bill tn
executive sessions.
The chairman said he - under
stood there were amendments to
oe considered, but ' he did not
know : what the attitude of the
committee would be -or to -what
extent members would seek to
change the measure as ft passed
the bouse. Discussion of the pos
sibility of retaliation, however,
urougni irom senator Penrose the
comment that -It Is the first time
I have heard the Question of prob
able retaliation so clearly stated."
