An elderly man stepped off the
curbing at State and Thirteenth
streets yesterday in front of a
passing automobile and was
struck down by a fender on the
machine and carried a short dis
tance before the driver could stop,
according to a report made to the
police, by Clare Scott, driver of
the automobile. Mr. Scott said
the man was not injured and he
took him to his home.

curred yesterday at the intersec

streets when automobiles driven

collided. Both of the machines

Intruder in Basement
A call was sent to the police
station Monday night by Robert
B. Duncan, 611 South Commer-
cial street, that there was some
one in the basement of his home
and an officer was wanted to in
vestigate. Police Officers Victor
and Brown answered the call, and
found the basement window had
bene jimmied, through which an
entrance into the basement had
been gained. However, It ap
peared that the intruder had been
frightened away.

feet high. 59 years old. with dark
brown hair, blue eyes and weigh
ing about 120 pounds, has strayed
from the state hospital where he
was helpng with the gardening.
He is a patient at the hospital and
wandered away yesterday afternoon.

retary of state a sttement of its
business in Oregon for the month
of October, showing sales ot 587,-
671 gallons of gasoline and 36,
563 gallons of distillate, on wheh
was Paid a tax of 16059.48. Dur
ing the same period the Shell
company of California sold in the
state 185.348.5 gallons of gaso
line on which it paid a tax of
$1853.49.

scholarship at Oregon Agricul
