FAILURE OF THE INTERCHURCH WORLD MOVEMENT disease? .Why .should men take precautions against possible ac cidents! The inevitable conclusion from such an absurd belief is that a man cannot die until his foreordained time has come, no matter what be, does or fails to do. -.Most' men have come to understand that God s laws ns to the physical life and health of men act largely according to the conditions which they themselves create. So, too, many in telligent men have come to see that His moral and spiritual laws, including the laws relating to salvation lrom sin, act largclv according to the conditions created by our own efforts, conduct and life. 9 We should be slow to accept interpretations of the Scrip tures, even though promulgated by men learned in books and theoloev, which violate every rule of reason ana common sense When such interpretations and the theories built upon them are thrust upon us, before accepting them it would be well to re fleet that the spiritual knowledge and vision of all men are at best verv limited. Until we have an illumiuation of the spirit. makine clear to us the things difficult to understand, it is well to be satisfied to take the simple and plain teachings of Jesus, the Disciples and Apostles, as recorded n the New Testament, and try to incorporate them n pur lives and to square our conduct bv them. These are not; difficult to understand, and for the rest we can well await that full illumination of the spirit which, when it comes, it is promised, shall make all things clear. ," v. We may all safely rest in the assurance that there will nev er be any punishment for right doing, either in this 'premillen nium dispensation" or any other, and no damnation for living the golden rule, or for righteousness, unselfish love, justace anc truth in life and conduct. And these things surely are the sou of the New Testament and of the very spirit of Christ. , (Copyrighted by the San Jose Mercury.) , The Christian Advocate in a recent article practically ad mits the failure of the Interchnrch World Movement which most broad-minded Protestants hoped would accomplish great things for Protestantism, if it did not inaugurate a revival of religiou. The principal cause for this failure, as pointed out by the Advo cate, is a division of sentiment among Protestants themselves. H may.be surprise ta.tnany people to learn that quite a large percentage of the membership of the Protestant churches of thL country have become, converts to the so-called Premillennial Theory of the coming of Christ. The Advocate declares that ".This movemeht!has its followers in almost every Protestant church in he United States. A leader of one of the larger Prot estant denominations recently stated that from' his observation there was not a church of his denomination in which there was not a division upon the subject' . This premillennial movement seems to accept the old pre destination or foreordination theories of John Calvin, according to which only the elect are to be saved, but with this modifies tioh : It limits this election to what it is pleased to designate as "this premUlennial dispensation, "and teaches that when Christ personally appears again and establishes His temporal kingdom ' upon the earth, "all mankind will be saved by the power of Ifis glorious presence In other words, a limited atonement only for the elect in this premillennial dispensation, and salvation for all, or Universalism, in the next or postmillenn al dispensation. I These converts to the Premillennial Theory f the New Tes tament seem to have savagely fought the Inti rehurch World Movement from the start! The Christian Advocj te quotes Dr. I. M. Haldeman, pastor of the First Baptist churyh of New York City," and Dr, Courtlarid Meyers of Boston, another leading teacher of the premillennium coming of Christmas strongly op posing it. Others attack it visrorously'as a religious "monstros ity' and an fill-starred movement." i ' - Dnrins the war most of the cedars of Lebanon were cut down fcr firewood. Read, your ZeCha riah, xl:l-2. With the women voting at the Lext ' presidential.- election , th Democrats of the south will have an added - burden of suppressing the female Republican colore! tote in 'that section in addition . to the male. Proclamation of the new state cf Lebanon has been made. The councils of the government will probably be held under the his toric cedars of which Jeremiah wrote, "Oh, Lebanon, thou mak er t thy nest in the cedars." It ts suggested that Cox uight explain t to the many lady voters who are asking him if he Is dry that. the wettest man In the world will spend most of his time feel ing dry. It is op to hfm to feel 1 dry while he is west of the Mis sissippi. Dot he will grow pro gressively wetter as he goes eait, and he will be as wet as the At lantic ocean when he gets near to the shores of that "big drink." The leaders of this premillennial movement 'frankly de ny," to again quote the Advocate, "that it is the purpose of God through, the '.church to save the world, or o make it a decent place in which to live; and that the Christianizing of the world is no part of the work :f the church. Its work is simply to evangelize the world, toWoclaim the gospel, whose benefits in this dispensation are limited to the elect, the called, the ecclesia." - ... ....... j Knowing . something of. the ideas of these Premillennium Theorists, briefly outlined above; makes it easy to understand why they have fought the Interchnrch World Movement, which was organized with the hope of uniting all denominations in an effort to Christianize the world. It seems that the same lnflu rnces that have produced. the sectarian Schisms in the Christian church have .operated .to prevent any large success of the Inter church-World Movement.' At the head of these influences are the literali&ts those who never get- beyond the letter of the Scriptures, who profess to believe every word of the New Tes tamentijust 'as it reads,- even when such literal interpretation as they give it is utterly out of harmony -with the spirit of the NewjTcstament This class of people are also fond of isolating and unduly emphasizing certain passages of the Scriptures, ana doggedly shutting their eyes to anything in the Bible that might nuimy or mouuy incir ianaticai lueas ana meoroes. " Those who have brought themselves to believe anything so spiritually deadening as this premillennial theory have probably reached a point in dogmatic fanaticism where they cannot be reasoned with or influenced aeainst it. But those who have not reached this point may, perhaps, he warned successfully agains accepting, a theory which takes away the motive for spiritual ef fort growth or development. If God has foreordained that certain individuals in "this premillennial dispensation' shal be heirs of salvation, and all others are predestined to be damned, tvhv nut.1 forth anv effort to Christianize the world Whv strive to incorporate in our-own lives the principles and spirit of Christ? If the final result in each individual case is alreadyFdefinitely determined, such efforts are useless, and time and labor thrown away. , TVbe consistent, these people must believe that God has foreordained the exact time and manner of every person s death If so, why should men learn anything of the laws of sanitation or health? Of what practical use is the science of medicine, or Christian Science, or anything else calculated to prevent or cure will hare nothing to do with So cialism. iCommnnism or Soviet-1 xa. The jreent administration has been a failure in so many differ ent respects that it is tedious to keep count of them. IT HAS HARASSED AND REPRESSED BUSINESS, it has truckled anj groveled to the demands of radi calism, it has piled up enormous debts and wasted the public funds, far beyond the reasonable needs of the war, it has IN EQUITABLY DISTRIBUTED the BURDENS OF TAXATION, and it; has fostered policies which have Increased the cost of living. Barring accident, the votes of Maine will find an echo clear across the land, and in Novem ber the result will show the elec tion of Harding with a decisive cess that will give unmistakable evidence of the determination of the people. T CHICKEN'S AND CREAM. ARE THEY RENEGADES? Another thing, do the twenty one senators of the Democratic party who voted for the Lodge amendments to the League of Nations represent the Democratic party or any portion of it." or are they renegades? : That Is an inquiry from a friend at the writer's elbow. la the list is the name of Sen ator Pbelan of California.. Are those men Democrats? What is their position in the eyes of President Wilson and Mr. Cox? . The people Are perplexed when representatives of a party take contradictory '"t action on a vital question. The twenty-one sena tors calling themselves Democrats should square themtelvem with their party leaders. THE VOICE FROM 3LUXE. from Leslie's Weekly, furnishes a sufficient index for the people's choice. Both men started as poor boys, and both have been successful. Cox has won by far the largest fortune, but hi? method of winning 'it has gained him no friends. He has been as cold as an oyster, and as calcu la ting as n adding' machine. His town is not filled with the monuments of his generosity, for he has none. Harding, on the other hand, has shared hia more moderate success by helping nearly every .enterprise for the welfare of his native town. These factors are important only as reflecting the basic .character of the two men. The presidency is an office of vast Importance. and no fact is too small to be considered in determfnlng 'the fitness of the man who is to fill it. ; There can be no doubt that the cotmtry prefers a 'man of the Harding type for president.' He represents business integrity, san ity,' progressive American policy as distinguished from the new fangled Internationalism, and a steadfast guarantee of the squire deal between capital and labor. undaunted by agitators and Un shaken by the winds of radical Ism. . , Cox Is trying to be a weak echo rorTresideht-WTlsoiirwhTlV il3n1 Fng represents about everything which is the opnpsite of Wood row Wilson. Trust Department SALEM :: OREGON (San Francisco Journal of Com merce.) I For two generations the say ing has been current: : "As goes Maine, so goes 'the nation." There have been but few exceptions to the , rule. This is not - because Maine as a state has any com manding influence, but because its state election occurs ; two months before the national election. The dominating thought of the nation spreads over Maine and finds expression In this ad vance election. The time is too short to, work any general change from that first impression.
