What his mind is absorbed with during his waking hours, and especially in the quiet and seclusion of. his cham ber, is his life, lhe New Testament records Jesus as tersely saying: "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he." As he hmks m his heart" so is life unconsciously shaped. Thus his ideals are formed, thus his ambitions take shape, thus his character is builded. By the thoughts, "in his heart, rather than by his deliberate purpose it is determined whether his life is to be large, strong, useful, pure, and a blessing to society, or narrow, sinful, weak, criminal, a block in the path of progress. IF ALL THIS BE TRUE. IiUV IMPORTANT THAT ONE SHOULD THINK THE BIGGEST, HIGHEST. PUR EST, MOST BEAUTIFUL THOUGHTS OF WHICH HE IS CAPABLE! Instead of being forbidden to think, by every possible means his mind should be led to the contemplation of the large, pure and beautiful things in life and thus stim ulate in him these things that make it easy for him to tread the upward way. A little knowledge is said to be a dangerous thincr. but in religion as in everything else there is safety in full, in com plete knowledge. Of course, absolutely full knowledge is to be found only in the Great Source of all knowledge, and can be acquired only by coming into actual relations with this source m ones own consciousness: but until this comes. freedom and independence in thinking of, and striving for, the largest noblest, purest and most beautiful things, in creation, lead unerringly toward this final communion with the Infinite. " i i A VLEA FOR INDEPENDENT THINKING. from any quarter, it would have no injury done Marion county; tut it Is among those whe be lieve that a reapportionment of legislative membership la due. It does not speak particularly for Multnomah county nor for Mar lon nor any of the large counties, but for the smaller counties. The present plan of apportionment la absurd, discriminatory, unfair, pot truly representative. Here, lor example, are six counties Crook. Deschutes. Grant. Jeffer son. Klamath. Lake joined to gether In a single district and given a grand total of two repre sentatives. . The result is tnai four of the fix counties must al ways be without direct represen tation in the house. They are certain ta feel that In many mat ters they are denied a voice, and it will be true. A fair and practicable method ot apportionment would be to as- Cox Is trying to prove that rhere are other great liars be sides ' himself. What did Franklin DJ Roosevelt io in this matter? (Copyrighted by. The San Jose Mercury) Even about matters of the highest importance to them selves and the world, few people do their own thinking. They mav have ideas about various things, but upon critical exam ination these ideas will of ten be found not to be based upon first hand knowledge or upon experience or any, deep or serious study or thought by ttfe individual upon his own ac count They are apt to be superficial impressions gained from other neoDle or from indiscriminate reading of news- TtoriAiVaU nr hnn Mnnv nf Uipsa imnrpssions are Tni8 Mother baby edition of ' J . r r . - T. . . . Having settled certain things in their own minds, they are constantly on their guard against entertain ing any thought that might tend to unsettle or upset their ideas about these certain things. They only think the things they want to think, shutting their minds against anything not in harmony with their preconceived opinions. This habit o mind, which is all too common, is what makes the unreason ing, extreme partisan in politics and the hopeless bigot in re- Hgion. 7--"'-?'" v.7;:7f':7';: :. " "' : '7 ; ' ;" ' Another large class of people are really afraid to think. Having been taught to believe that their-salvation from the fires of hell depends upon accepting certain religious formu las, they shudder at the suggestion of anything not in entire harmony with, these formulas. Thus men in all ages have become the slaves of creeds and the unresisting dupes of sacerdotalism. Indeed, until the United States of America was born, it was thought by most of the world to be pre sumptuous, if not criminal, for them to think anything ex cept what those in authority told them to think, at least about governmental or religious matters; But a new day is dawn ing. Civil and religious liberty is coming to mean more than it has in the past, even in this country. The coming of this day of, larger liberty is a call to every man to do JiU own thinking and refuse to follow any leader or leaders blindly, whether these leaders be social, industrial, political ' or re ligious. , The bigot cannot iustifv his bizotrv nor the strict sectar- !an oymiqo li!a tiarrnwnoea" hv onvtViiner in tlm JwTVctit tomorrow.
