XEWSPAPKRMAX DIES. WASHINGTON. Aug. 27. George II. Peet, newspaperman and lawyer, died tonight, aged 53 years. . - KAFOURY TALIS ABOUTBUSjESS Salem Merchant Comments on His Observations in Eastern Centers N. C. Kafoury, senior member of the mercantile firm of Kafoury Brothers, returned yesterday after a business trip consuming about six "weeks and covering Chicago. Philadelphia, New York and other eastern centers of activity. He says the retail - business Is very good, but the wholesale bus iness is quiet. The ordering for the fall trade Is past some time ago and about next month the rush will be on for the - spring trade. - There is a painful uncer tainty In all lines of merchandis ing, as nobody seems to know what is going to happen in the matter of prices. The retaAer is afraid to order heavily at present quotations, lest there should come a tumble and he 1e caught la the slump with a heavy stock of costly goods on his hands. The wholesaler, in the absence of or ders, does not like to . stock op heavily for the same reason, and so he is not ordering from the mills, and in the absence ot the jobbers demand the mill man is not turning out the cloth, so sev eral mills are shutting down and others are running on half time. The mill, man tell the wholesaler to send In his orders - and the goods will be made for him at me mm a price, out there Is not going to be any stuff turned out upon the market otherwise. The same is true of the ready- to-wear goods. About the close of Juno the work of making for me ran 4 trade is completed an the months , or July and August are devoted to making up garm ents for immediate current deliv ery. This year, there is not an article on the sbelvea for immedi ate delivery, and - the retailers' demands are supplied by making up the goods after the order is received. Nobody is taking any chances. " Prices of cotton goods continue high, a fact that is credited to the automobile business, which uses a large amount of that ma terial. Ginghams, for Instance, open this fall 12 4 cents a yard higher than they were a year ago, but there are no orders go ing In. . Coarse wool is cheap, but fine wool, which is in greatest demand, la high and is hard to get. In dress goods and clothing, nobody seems to want coarse goods; ail call for the finest stuff, and that keeps the price up. The redn tloa in the price of raw materials has no effect on the manufactu rers prices, as they claim the In crease - in wages has - more - than offset it. . ,,- ". " ' Mr. Kafoury is well pleased with his trip, as he had a chance to observe conditions im the cen ters where trade and business are manipulated and controlled. He also got in touch with some of the big bouses for future oper ations and has employed a real-! dent buyer, who will keep con stant track of the market and take advantage of every favorable turn.
