The first formal complaint
against tie extension policy of the
Portland Railway. Light & Power
company has been filed with the
public service commission by Karl
Milbrandt. Frank Tifs and G. V-
Robertson. They alleged that the
company has refused to extend
them light service unless they
make an advance payment suffi
cient to cover a period of two
years. They demand that the
company show cause why the ex
tension should not be made on a
more generous basis.

Obviously the cold nights of the
past few days impulsed some
"prince of the road" to purloin
a roll of bedding Troni Ben Wil
son" of Brooks, who had come to
Salem In quest of employment.
In addition to the' loss of his bed
ding. Mr. Wilson says he had two
pairs of overalls, two jumpers,
two pairs of work shoes, a green
cap and several white collars
wrapped in the roll of bedding.

from a down town building.

Bill Wilant. who went from Sa
lem to enlist in machine gun com
pany No. 347. and was wounded
five times while helping break the
back of the German army in the
Argonne forest, is visiting friends
in Salem. Mrs. W. E. Allen, his
mother, who lived in Salem, has
moved to Bremerton. Wash. Bill
spent 23 months In hospitals after
his little introduction to the re
treating German solders in the
Argonne. who sent' back their
compliments as they retreated in
the shape of high explosives. He
is now directly from the Letter
man hospital in San - Francisco,
and he must have another opera
tion before the doctors pronounce
G. II. Running of Portland was
in the city yesterday. He came
to Salem to confer with the G. A.
R. and V. R. C. organizations in
regard to arrangements for the'
transportation of delegates to the
convent! jds meeting in Indianapo
lis on September 19.

a two weeks visit to Losline. Wal

represents the equivalent ot the
damage suffered by their repu

Intoxication lmird.
The defendants admit the alle
gation that on August 14 they
were at the datfee hall, but deny
that they were Intoxicated. Wolfe
and Smith assert that they were
sober, peaceable, and conducted
themselves in a gentlemanly man
ner on August 14. when one of
the defendants. Gerald Wolfe, was
forcibly ejected from the dance
hall as an undesirable character.
Wolfe claims that the motive for
his ejection was Jealousy.
On August 14. according to
their answer. Wilbur Smith vis
ited the dance hall, and gained
entrance hy paying 25 cents,
which fee admitted him to the
dance hall with the privileges ot
a spectator. Immediately follow
int him waa Gerald Wolfe, but
the agent of the management of
the dance hall, who was stationed
at the door, denied admission to
Wolfe, he avers, without giving
reasons.
Wolfe returned a second time.
he said, durinr the same evening.
but this time accompanied by his
sister. Mrs. T. C. Fair, as his
dance partner, but was met at the
door by twp representatives of
the dance hall management, he

he engaged them in a fight.
whereupon his friend. Wilbur
Smith, assisted him. and says he
believes that the agents ot the
dance hall were beaten up.
Wolfe Is War Veteran.
Wolfe claims that he Is a vete
ran of the world war. and has
taken advantage of the homestead
act benefitting returned soldiers
by taking up a homestead near
Gates. He claims that the man
agers of the dance hall, because
he filed on land which they want
ed, are Jealous of him and have
repeatedly annoyed him and an

Smith and Wolfe seek a dismis
sal of the suit, costs and disburse
ments of the suit, and a judg
ment against fhe plaintiff for
$20,000. which sum the defend
ants claim represent the damage
suffered by their reputations..

"It is our understanding that a
refund will be made on all ship
ments of the highway commission
that have moved since March 1.
1920. and on which no redactions
have been made, it you will pre
sent the original paid freight bills
to the company.
"The matter of rates after Sep
tember 1. 1920. is still under
consideration by the railroad com
pany, and you win be advised
later as to what will be done in
the matter."
