Officers Victor and Moffit were sent out from the sta tion to investigate the report. Upon their arrival the officers dis covered Wiley In a comatose con dition as the result of a beating said to have been administered by his wife with a two-foot board which the police say had nails in It. Mrs. Wiley Informed the potlce that she assaulted her husband in self de fense, as he had vought to abuse her shortly after he awoke, from a drunken sleep. , According to the report, of Mrs. Wiley, made to the Investigating of ficers, her husband returned home at about 10 o'clock Saturday night in an intoxicated condition. He was soon overcome by sleep. Shortly after midnight he awoke In an Irri table moou and sought to Intimidate his wife, which resulted in his being bludgeoned. The officers brought Wiley to the city jail and released him Sunday morning when he gave a $10 bond for his appearance In police court Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock tie iorieiied his bond by non-ap pearance. Moffit lectured to the young sters. restored order and sent them home. Catherine Couley. 1 1 years old. daughter of Mr. and' Mrs. Romeo Couley. received serious Injuries when she was struck by the fender of an automobile driven by Frank C. Perry Sunday. The accident hap pened 11 miles north of Salem on the Pacific highway. The girl received broken Jaw and severe Injuries about the bear and face. She Is in the Dea coness hospital In Salem. Apparently no blame Is attached to the driver of the automobile. He was not driving rapidly, it Is said, and the automobile struck the girl when she suddenly ran Into the road from be hind a truck that was standing in the road. A. B.
