Skelton Complains That Van
dals Disturb Markers in
Local Surveys
At the city council meetin? Mon
day night a bill wax presented mak
ing it unlawful for individuals to re
move, destroy, deface, mutilate or
change the eity engineer's survey 'tt
grades for sidewalks, boundaries,
stakes or markers.
City Engineer Skelton complained
to the council of individuals remov
ing and defacing his surveys which
necessitated making new survey.
This makes double expense to the
city. The bill passed first and sec
ond reading and was referred.

Any objection to the assessment for
the Improvement of the designated
streets must be presented to the
council by August 16, 1920.
A communication from R. V. Dav
is was read, ia which the writer de
clared that he has made several re
quests of the Salem' Water company
to establish a water hydrant nea his
premises. lie said the water company
has ignored bis requests. A motion
was passed advising Mr. Davis to
make a complaint to the public set
vice commission.

Another communication was read
from Mr. and Mrs. Eaton Randolph
petitioning the city council to "sell a
lot on the corner of Bellevqe and
South Twelfth streets. Mem bets of
the council claim that the lot I
needed by the city for-the storing ot
tiles and other city property.

the first and second' readings and
was referred.

dstrict. 14 miles west of here, was
J r rested ov Sheriff John W. Orr las
night on a charge of operating a
liquor still. Search of the premises
by the she.itf and deputies brought
forth the still in which the liquor
was made and also several bottles
of the distilled product.
Lewis had been unde- 'isieion
for some time as he appeared to
live without doing any manual labor
while the camps in that vicinity were
hard pressed for men. He has a
wire and six small children.
Sheriff Orr brought hi prisoner
to Dallas where be was locked in the
county jail awaiting others of the
federal government who have been
notified of the arrest.
The still, which was made out of
a copper wash boiler, together with
samples of the moonshine were also
brought to Dallas. This is the sec
ond arrest of a moonshiner in Polk
county since the) prohibition law
went into effect.

Aviator Killed in
Farewell Flight
PORTLAND, Ore.. Aug. 3. An
estate of $22,483 was left by Edward
W. Wilson. Portland ex-army aviator
killed at Fort Worth. Tex., recently,
according to appraisal filed In pro
bate today. Mrs. Annie Wilson, the
.dead aviator's .mother, is the sole
beneficiary. Wilson was taking a
farewell flight when he fell and was
killed.

Bald Eagle Worsted
in Fight With Salmon
SEATTLE. July 30. With right
bants upraised and left hands acros3
their hearts, every man aboard the
schooner Roosevelt, from the master
to the cook, averred they saw a huge
bald eagle take a wild ride In the
stretch ot water between Cape Madge
and Seymour Narrows. Gulf of Geor
gia. And they brought the eaglo t
Seattle to prove the tale. The RooC-
velt was on its way to Seattle from
the fishing banks la Hecate Stroll.
Shortly after passing Seymour Nar
rows members of the crew noticed a
bald eagle flying close to the water
nar the vessel. As they watched
the big bird'sklmming near the sur
face, a spring salmon, estimated to
weigh about 20 pounds leaped clear
of the swift moving current. Ouicx
as a flash the eagle drove his sharp
talons Into' the fish's back..
There was a great splash as the
big springer dived, taking the eagle
beneath the surface. All hands
rnshed to the rail to watch the strug
gle. Three times the fish and bird dTs
mp pea red In the water while ihe
Roosevelt steered a close coarse be
hind them.
Finally the eagle loosened its bold
on the salmon and flopped onr on
Ihe surface of the water completely
exhausted. It had put up a fcame
fight but had lost iU urty.
The crew of the Roosetel: pulled
the bird aboard with a bait took. The
eagle was soaking wet lu. n deck
it soon recovered and showed fight.
While the battle between the biid
and fish was in progress two other
eagles flew around the vicinity
screaming loudly.
Captain Harney Pederson brought
the captured eagle to Seattle and pre
sented it to one of the public parks.

Not Stop at Qaeenstown
LIVERPOOL. Aug. 3. The gov
ernment has informed the Cunard
company that prevailing condition
in Ireland may prejudice the ordin
ary safeguards for navigation" and
that therefore the government con
siders It advisable, as a temporary
precaution, for passenger ships to
proceed to English ports without
calling at Queenstown. It. requests
the Cunard line to make arrange
ments accordingly.

and many hundreds of gallons of the
berries were gathered. The berries
are unusually large this year aad
also very pientifuL Several of the
parties ran upon bears also gather
ing the fruit, and In every Instance
the animals were gives the freedom
of the patch. Hears are more plen
tiful In the lowlands this year than

Tiny Model Kept Crowd
Informed on Yacht Race
SEATTLE. Aug. 2. Rigged In
precisely ' the same manner as the
Reaolute and Shamrock IV. two tiny
models of the America's cup racers,
suspended from wires leading across
the street irom the second story of
the Seattle Times building, kept the
throngs below informed on the pro
gress of the International yacht
races.
The hulls of the little yachts were
two feet In length and painted simi
lar to the cup defender and chal
lenger.
The Resolute model flew the
Star Spangled Banner., while the
British ensign fluttered from the
little green boat. They boved for
ward as the Associated Press bulle
tins Indicated the position ot the
racers.
The wires on which the models
traveled were stretched to corre
spond to the race courses, and the
miniature sloops progressed true to
scale from start to finish While
their admirers cheered and argued
fervidly on the sidewalks and streets
below.
Oregon Growers Erect
Immense Drying Plant
DALLAS. Or.. Aug. 3. (Special!
to The Statesman.) One of the
largest prune dryers in this part of
the state Is being erected on the
property of the Oregon Growers' Co
operative association In the south
part of town near the big packing
plant erected by that concern this
spring. The dryer will be used ex
clusively by those members of the
association who have no dryers of
their own. i
The new dryer, together with those
ot. Individual persona, will be re
quired to dry the large) crop of
prunes that is anticipated from the
Folk county orchards ext fall.
Never in years has ihe outlook for
such a bumper crop been so good as
at the present time, the late rains
injuring .the prunes enough moist
ure to grow to large siie. The July
drop was about the same as usual.
but should the drop In August be
light, many of Ihe growers will have
to go over their orchards and thin
the crop by hand as the trees in
loaded to the breaking-down point
