Miller and A. P. Howe. Jr. . The Elks' state convention which is now being held in Salem promises to be an interesting and Important one. Many Question of Importance are to be considered. Salem is par ticularly fitted for s convention city. The picturesque and beautiful scen ery surrounding our city attracts and charms the visitor. The state institutions are places of interest Taken all in all. we do not know thst Salem, with Ita wide streets snd delightful scenery, csn be sur passed by sny other city in our state. The Elk organization was origl nally instituted by actor, but at the present time is composed of per-, rons engaged la different occupa tions. Intellectual and progressive minds are attracted to this organi sation. It lives, not upon the tra ditions of the past, but In the pres ent, and looks forward to the great work which will be carried on in the future by its member. Patrio tic and loyal to .the principles upon which our country was founded. It will, in the future, a in th past, assist In th glorious work carved out for thl great republic. Charity Chief Virtue. The principal tenets of our order are charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity. Charity embraces all the others. It Is the chief corner stone or the Elks . organisation. There is no attribute one possesses equal to IL Charity Is the "noblest tree in the garden of the virtues.' Outside- of the charitable feature of the order or Elk. It is the great Bohemian order. Not Bohemian in the ordinary and common accepta tion of the word, but in the larger and more intellectual character of theN interpretation of the same. It mean those who love the beauties of nature and delight In .the con- templatlon of the beautiful in the m t at aaiafi Stan 114 saw, t te eaa V aa ssaaas arts, science, literature, the profes- sions ana histrionic achievements. The versatile and clever Charles S. Vivian, the founder of our order, was of the theatrical profession, a bright and luminous etar therein. Each member of the order who un derstands the principle thoroughly la imbued with the artistic and po etical sentiment expressed In the poem: "I'd rather lire in Bohemia than in any other land." Jadgraeen ot Ilarsh. Another leature of the order that commends Itself to right-thinking people Is that It Judge men far differently from the world. The world's criticism is harsh and se vere. The only persons whom the Elks are inclined to criticise se verely are those who hold them selves out as teachers of men. For those who have fallen by the way side on account of environment and' great temptation, our principle ad- -monlsh ns to te lenient In our criti cism of them. It is well known that "men's evil manners live in brass; their virtues we write in water." Another beautiful thought commen ded by our order is "the fsulta of our brothers we write upon the sands; their virtues upon the tab lets of love and memory." . - The order of Elks realizes what a struggle we are engaged In from the cradle to the grave hence the discriminating judgment it enter tains toward poor, weak humanity. One of the beautiful customs of our order Is its remembrance of our absent brothers. They are remem bered whenever the lodge la in ses sion and when the hour of 11 falls upon the dial of night, and more particularly at our memorial day services, which occurs on the first Sunday in December of each year.
