every year,
. Salem is growing mote ricarlyv self-sufficient
every month and every, day of thtf year.
When she shall have fully developed her f if tv-two most impor
tant basic industries, which the Salem Slogan pages of The Statesman
are showing to the world, and many others of importance, there will
be little for which she will have to send away to distant points, in
, the way of things to eat and wear
And then Salem will have many times jn value the things to sell
above the total cost of the things she, will need to buy.
That is what makes a wealthy city and a wealthy community
Backed by a uibralter prosperity that tio sort of adversity can
shake. . , . . ,
The Salem Slogan pages of this morning are devoted to Salem
as a wholesaling and jobbing center. The, importance of this basic
source of wealth to this city and community is well illustrated by
the men, firms and corporationsalrCady represented here, as follows:

There may be others; and. there surely will be, as our jpaved
roads systems reach out and add tens of thousands of more people
' to our city, and make Ibem as much residents of Salem as those with
in the corporate limits, for trade purposes. ; . : "
Some of the pioheer firms mentioned above have5 in the past
fought an uphUI fight, in 'getting Salem recognized as a wholesaling
and jobbing center; and placed on an equality with the larger eities
of the country by the great manufacturing firms of the United States.
The pioneering work has been largely done, and the paths will
be smoother? fo those who come after them.
In some of the lines, the writer thinks the wholesaling and job
bing business of Salem is already very well taken care of, though
not llbw oveTvdone. It is hot desirable that any line should be over
done. It is better that all should prosper; tbat each man, firm and
corporations engaged in these lines should have foora to grow.
But the writer belieyes that it would be good for Salem to reach
out after wwn e new lines that are not now represented here. 'There
is a welcome here for men wishing to so engage their capital and en
ergiesti. ' Thjs field wUl bear full investigation by such men.
, -j . NextWeek, the Salem Slogan editor will try id prove that more
r cucumberspihould be grown here; and that there is no country Of
fering better opportunities than this to men who understand this line
of, agricuntire, and who have the necessary capital to engage in it
with4 the prjoper facilities for success.

nounced that he placed Mr. McAdoo

From time to time the convention
got echoes of the wet and dry fight
being waged on the outside behind
the closed doors of the platform com
mittee, but it devoted itself wholly
so far as the organized program with
setting the nominating speeches out
or tbe way and clearing the decks
lor consideration of the platform to
morrow. It was expected that all
the nominating speeches would be
made today and that, when an ad
journment was taken until tomorrow
morning at 11 o'clock the conven
tion would have a clear track' to be
gin consideration of the platform
with its sure fight on the wet and
dry uwue and posaiblv some other
planks. .
' Weary Day Closes.
But after eight weary and racking
hours of, continuous session that
were Jammed with nerve strain, the
convention felt it had had enough
after .it heard' the nominating
speeches for ten candidates, conclud
ing with Governor Edwards .ofr New
Jersey and on motion of Representa
tive Flood of Virginia suspended its
