Local Bricklayers Raise
Scale to Ten Dollars Daily
The local union of bricklayers has
been constrained to rai?e the wage
scale to $10. meeting the standard
of the tri-state bricklayers' confer
ence before it -could be in a position
to gain admission to that confer

president of the local union, an ap
plication for admittance to the con
ference has been forwarded.
Mr. Viesko claims that the wage
scale for bricklayers for an eight
hour day in Portland and in the
states of Idaho and Washington is
$ 10.

Woman Suspected
in Elwell Murder
NEW YORK. June 22. District
Attorney Swann announced tonight
that he had sent for Miss Elly Hope
Anderson, a Minneapolis singer, to
question her In connection with his
investigation of the murder of Jos.
B. Elwell, wealthy turfman and
whist expert, found with a bullet
hole through his head at his home
on June 11.
Miss Anderson was the dinner
guest of Victor von Schlegell. a New
York businessman, at the Ritx Carl
ton hotel on the night before Elwell
was slain. While dining on the ho
tel roof they met Elwell. accompan
led by Miss Viola Kraus. divorced
wife of von Schlegell. land other
friends. The district attorney said
he intends to question Miss Anderson
about this meeting and of events
prior and subsequent thereto.
Asked If be considered her as an
Important witness in the case, Mr.
Swann replied:
"Yon can make it emphatic that
we do not regard Misv Anderson as
one upon whom even the shadow of
a suspicion rests In connection with
the murder."

Clow, former marathan runner, to
day established what is believed to
be a new world's record for endur
ance at golf He completed between
4 a. m. and 6.2" p. in , 11 complete
rounds of the course, approximately
T0 miles. Clow is a businessman of
Tacoma and has been in training tor
two weeks for the event. The best
previous record known to Tacoma
was established in the east last sum
mer when a player covered ten
rounds of an 18-hole course in a
day.

New Help Bureau

tary clubs in annual convention here

establishing of a "bureau of help to
employers" to be located at the Chi
cago headquarters of the association
It will be under the direction ot the
committee on business methods. The
duty of the bureau will be to gather
tor the use and information of all
rotarians data concerning practical
methods of dealing with problems of
relations between employer and em
ploye. The action was taken after
an address by Judge W. L. Hugglns
of the Kansas court of industrial
relations.

Troy, N. Y., club, was passed desig

John Mitchell, cited tor bravery on
the battlefields or France, was not
sent to Jail today for violation of his
parole after his war record had been
explained to Superior Judge Glenn.
Mitchell. In 1916 was granted pro
bation on a charge of failing to pro
vide for children. A year later h
disappeared. Today it became known
that under the name of. William
Reed, he bad enlisted in the If. 3rd
infantry and had fought in the bat
tle of the Meuse-Argonne and in
Flanders. He was also wounded
Judge Glenn allowed him his lib
