.The Salem Deaconess hospital was
opened on December S, 1)16. with
' three sisters who were nurses; The
organization had secured from-J. H.
Albert a tract of land 165 bjr 35i
feet, and the beginnings were. made

which had stood on the corner where
the eltr Ubrarr now stands, and
wblch bad been bought by, Mr. Al
bert and raored to the hospital site

The hoanitaT organisation is under
the auspices of the Mennonite church
of Oregon. It Js the, emir. Deaconess
hospital, of that denomination on the
Pacific roast, so that it draws arm
pithy and support Trom far' places.
WHY CHANGE

In 1918 a new building or annex
was added, at an expense of about
$5000. proTiding eight additional
rooms for patients.

The new building, now in course
of construction and to fee ready for
occupancy in the early tall, will hare
cost, when fully equipped, about
$50,000. It will giTe room for the
accommodation of at least 62 more
patients. '
It will increase the capacity of the
hospital to 100 patients, without
crowding aa much as is the rule now.
The new building Is 36 by 120 feet.
In 16 IS the Deaconess hospital
accommodated 700 patients, and In
191 there: were 814 patients who
were for. shorter or longer periods
under. that hospital roof. Since the
opening day 'about 3000 patients
hare been accommodated there.

These people largely work on the
land. Not many of them engage In
business. But they are good and
Intelligent farmers, and they are
thrifty and decent and law abiding
people. They are the kind of peoplo
the Salem district rery much needs.

of them.
Mr. Wedel says his people are very
proud of what they have so fsr been
able to accomplish, beset with many
aitrieulttes.

by perpetual charter. It waa founded
and conducted for (the highest ser
vice in every way It can unselfishly
