Mrs. F. C. liopson was a hostess
of the week when she entertained at
her South Twelfth street home Wed
nesday the members of the Yew Park
circle of the First Christian church
for the regular afternoon of study,.
After the class study a social hour
was enjoyed and in serving refresh
ments the hostess was assisted by
her daughter, Mrs. Paul Hendricks.
Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Griffith and
Miss Harriet Griffith, who have been
sojourning in southern California
during the winter arrived in Salem
last night and are again domiciled at
their Court street home.
The presence of the O. A. C. cadet
band from Corvallis In the city Tues
day was the cause of much peasure
to 'many folk. In the evening with
the boys glee club of the University
of Oregon and with the girls' glee
club from the State Normal school,
tbe. band gave a musical concert at
the armory. The', girls' club gave
several songs and the university
quartet aroused much enthusiasm

cadets gave the larger rart of the
musical program. Captain Harvey
Pea rid. who has been directing the
band for IS years, received much
pra'se for his work which was shown
in the concert Tuesday.
Captain Heard is Very proud of
bis nun 'and al.o the, fact that lhv
band has been self-supporting for
12 years. Next week the band goes
to play at the 11th annual straw
berry carnival at Hoseburg. The
cadets have played at these carni
vals for five years. For a two weeks
engagement the band played at the
World's fair at San Francisco as the
official state band. Many of the
band members are American legion
men; and many of them were in
France. Several nlembers are crip
pled; and several have been gassed.
Captain Heard, himself, is a veteian
of the Spanish-American war.
Mrs. Charles Wilson, superintend
ent of the primary department of the
First Presbyterian church, was host
ess at a reception Friday afternoon
from 3 until 5 o'clock in the ehurcu
parlors for the babies and their mo
thers. The attractive primary school
room was masked with. yellow Scotch
broom and on the tables yellow
Bhaded candies burned.. Happy little
kindergarten games made the after
noon delightful for the little tots and
social chat furnished diversion for
the matrons. A light lunch was
served at the close of the afternoon
ia the guests who numbered abo it
40 matrons with their children.

Anderson, Mrs. A. F. Marcus and
Mrs. Otto Wilson.
Miss Emily Bradeson and Mis
Ethel Roberts entertained with a
charming little kensingtbn at their
home in the Marion apartments
t hursday evening when ' they an
nounced the engagement of Miss Dot
lie Smith of this city to Willian Don
aldson, a mining engineer of Juneau.
Alaska. The announcement Is the
culmination of a romance begun last
summer when the bride-elect with
two er'.rl friends spent their vacation
in Alaska. The wedding will take
place in the summer.
The engagement was made known
at the Hunch time when dainty little
cards bearing the names of the eo-i-ple
were hidden on the: plates. The
announcement came as a complete
surprise to her friends.
The rooms of the apartment were
attractively adorned with baskets of
tulips in the pa.i 1 rhade. Mis
Smith has been in Salem about four
years whik teaching in the public
schools here. She is a niece of the
late Governor Chadwick.

ceived in Salem of the wedding of
Miss Myra Irvine, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Clare Irvine, formerly well
known Salem folk, but who now re
side In Santa Monica. Cal.. to Harry
Andrews Guardia. The wedding took
place Sunday. April 25. at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Irvine. Mr. and
Mrs. Guardia are to live in Culver
City. Cal.
During the time Mr. and Mrs. Ir
vine lived In Salem, which was from
180 to 1S97. the former worked on
The Statesman and for a part of that
4ime was manager anad Dart owner
Mrs. Irvine before her marriage was
Miss Plauondon. who was very active
In Salem.
Mr. and Mrs. Irvine made their
home on South Twelfth street until
thev left Salem In 1SS8 for Southern
California. They had many friends
here v.'ho will be Interested to know
of their daughter's marriage. The
bride is a native of Salem.
