Fruit growers are cautioned to watch the condition of their trees with the approach of warm weather. Professor C. I. Lewi, now gener al manager of tbe Oregon Growers Co-operative association, speaking of the caution which orchardtsls should exercise, stated yesterday that as a result of the unfavorable winter and as an attermatn ol some oi tne wia ter injury ,rnore or less sour-sap will be found In the trees. "This sour-sap condition Is ?ner ally accompanied by a reddifh di.cd? oration under the bark and In tbe sap wood." said the professor. "This can be easily ascertained by taking a sharp knife and making a few cuts tkrough the bark. If such trees do not have loose bark, expert ence In the past shows that a good remedy Is to slit the trunk and main branches. "This seems to save the structure of tbe tree from breaking down and exploding, so to speak, and may save many a tree that Is in bad condition. "However. It the bark of the tree is all loose, we would warn against splitting the bark. One can -ally determine whether any of the bark is loose by taking the handle of a knife and tapping the hark gently. "Loose b.ark always gives a hol low sound. Under sour-sap condi tions tbe bark tends lo get tight to the tree and the rutting seems to famish the- necessary relief. "We wosld strongly advise glow ers at this time to look over their trees very carefully. The simple remedy suggested may prove be helpful." BRIDGE BIDS TO.
