WHY ROUERTlSAVARIX SAID TO
MADGE "YOU SAVED MY SO
CIAL LIFE," AND DISCONCERT
ED DICKY.
I shall not . soon forget Robert
Sara rin's return to the world of lit
tle formal dinners, shaded lights and
gay chatter.
With an understanding of the so
cial handicap under; which he must
labor alter the terrible years or
blankness which had been his. I
planned to give a quiet little dinner
in his honor at our own home before
he would be compelled, to face the
ordeal elsewhere.
I wanted to have but six at the
table, the Durkees. Lillian. Savarin
and ourselves. Marion begged so
hard, however, to "sit up Just for
this once." that Dicky and I'oter
ruled her mother's request, and the
little maid was wild with delight.
The small girl had made a com
plete conquest of the famous artist
before she had known him five min
utes. Ever since her arrival they
had been inseparable. Perched on
his knee, she had prattled of all her
childish affairs, and questioned him
naively as to his life in the Catskills
and his work, and' she dragged him
with her to see the chickens and the
barn cats, the two great attractions
for Marlon which our country home
possessed.
Dicky and I. usually prime favor
lies with Marion, were set aside com
pletely. Dicky grumbled and pre
tended to be wildly jealous of the
famous artist, adding greatly to Mar
ion's glee thereby.
Lillian's eyes followed the strange
ly assorted pair everywhere. And
in them there shone such an an
guished recognition of the contrast
between Savarin's treatment of her
little' daughter and that given the
child by her husband. Harry Under
wood, that my heart ached for the
misery that was hers.
How Madge Helped.
" Purposely I made my little dinner
as formal as possible. for I knew
that as soon as his return to the
world was known. Robert Savarin
would be deluged with Invitations.
and I did not wish him to face the
ordeal of being entertained until he
first had had a chance of attending
dinner In the quiet, friendly and
uncritical attitude tht I knew would
permeate the atmosphere of my din
ing room.
I did not fully realize his dilem
ma. However, until just oeiore din
ner, when missing him. I found him
standing In the dining room.- unob
trusively studying the arrangement
of the silver.- It flashed upon me
that he was not sure what fashions
in serving had been changed since
his time. I managed to withdraw
without his seeing me. and when we
were seated at the table I took great
pains to pick up the particular piece
I wanted before the others, so that
the artist who sat on my right could
follow ray example without embar
rassment.
He got through the dinner with
out the slightest gaucherle. and In
the latter part of It delighted us all
with his reminiscences of the rich
past which had been his before the
tragedy bad shut him off from men
Like a. Schoolboy.
i
I could see that when he wan him
self and could rid bimseii
of his shyness that ne
would easily dominate any social
gathering. Dicky and Alfred Dursee
were like scbooiuoys at tne leet oi
the master In their reverence ana
admiration for him. Little Mrs.
Durkee and I. of course, were rather
awed by his brilliance and his repu
tation. And Lillian, usually the life,
the dominating spirit of every gath
ering, kept herself strictly to the
background.
