When Lillian Underwood shudder-
ingly dropped the gorgeous chrys
anthemums which Mr. Gordon had
brought me and went out of the
room I did not have to speculate up
on the reason for her action.
For I had seen the diabolically
cruel thing her husband had done.
With an evident wholesome fear
of my mother-in-law, who but a few
moments before had sternly rebuked
him for his discourteous comments
upon Lillian's altered appearance. h
had utiered no word that might
wound Lillian. But no insult shout
ed from the housetops could have
been more scathingly cruel than the
manner in which he first swept nie
with an admiring glance as I stood
with ray arms full of chrysanthe
mums, and then, turning to his wife
as she held up the rare wine-and-

Now I know from my study of Lil
lian and from what Dicky has told

a rarely beautiful womsn in her
youth, and that beside her I would

gown donned to do honor to mr
guests, I knew that I was lookins-
my best. While Lillian, who ror
some rearon f could not fathom, had
discarded the rouge, powder and dye
ing of her hair, which she had always
used, and was almost ugly on ac
count of her hair, which the dye had
left a horrid, streaked, drab color.
I think I "saw red" for a moment-

EVADE OFFICERS
Brichoux and Southwick Are
Reported to Be in Des
chutes County
Armed heavily with guns, doubt
less stolen from a store or farm
house. Dave Ilrichoux and K. B-
Southwick. fugitives from the Oregon
penitentiary, are said to be fleeing I
from officers in Descutes county. A
telezram has been received from
Sheriff S. K. Roberts of Bend, stat
ing positively that the convicts ar
in that connty and that they are wen
armed. No information has reached
here as to how large a force Is op
the trail of Ihe two runaways.
The convicts were first reported
to have been seen at Reedsport
Douglas county, and officers believa
they have made quick time In get
ting across the mountains Into Cen
tral Oregon. The report that they
were seen at Freewar. Umatilla
county. Is believed to be erroneous-

bank robber who escaped last week
