LOVETT r Tfl RFPflRT HW I THRIPS SURVEY Expert Scheduled to Appear Before Growers at Fruit Union Meeting Today INVESTIGATES ORCHARDS Damage 1$, Found Bat Pest May Not Be as Prevalent as First Feared .... A. L. Lovett, of Oregon Agricultural college who was. In Salem yetter- IX day and who Investigated the thrlps I to make a comprehensive report at X the meeting of the Salem Fruit un- ? ion today. He will appear at the X noon session and any persons Inter- I t Oct a , wKV . V I e are members of the fruit union are invited to attend this part of the meeting, as It Is considered highly Important. Professor Lovett believes he made a fairly comprehensive survey ot the orchards yesterday and believes that the area of thrips infestation is not as wide as has been feared. He said: While tn the limited time at our disposal It Is impossible to visit ev ery orchard, a fairly comprehensive serious thrlps infestation Is not so extensive as we oad feared. Prob ably the infestation is most serious Id the Liberty district, continuing northward toward town. North of town the serious attack covers a small area and dwindles to a negli gible factor. This Is likewise true on the outskirts of the Liberty sec tion. Growers should continue to keep a careful lookout for the pest and be prepared to handle It should it appear. In those orchards where the blos soms are so severely blighted that most have dropped and few will open spraying to save this year's crop would be of little value. Generally the. thrips are leavlar these wholly blighted orchards, flying to adjacent later blooming prunes or cherries. To prevent this miaration it would appear in some Instances advisable to spray. X, Again, bared on our observations of one day, we find but few thrlps in the open blossoms, and practically no Injury taking place. - Frequently in toe bulbs of the same trees, the infestation 1s extremely hlxh and hipley's "Where Shopping is a Plea-nre."
