Injured JIan lias Operation
Hoy L. Smith, who was seriously
Injured some weeks ago In an auto
accident near Lebanon, has been con
fined to his bed much of the time
Since, having suffered compound
fractures of several ribs. Recently
he showed symptoms of Internal in
juries, and yesterday he was taken
to the hospital and submitted to an
operation which revealed several
quarts of pU3 collected about his
lungs. He is reported in favorable
condition at this time.

W. E. Smith, son of W. D. Smith
of this city, arrived in Salem last
night from Orate Range, Mont. with
the expectation of locating here. He
was editor and publisher of a local
paper at that point, selling out the
publication before coming to Salem.

Warren Gilbert, a cartooning of na
tional reputation, spent several days
in Salem, leaving yesterday for Den
ver. He has done work for the Kan
sas City Star, Denver News and other
newspapers, and is now engaged as
advertising designer for the Gates

Guy O. Smith has Just returned
from a business trip to the Yakima
valley and to Tacoma. He states
that the crops are In fine condition
in the irrigated sections and there
Is an air of prosperity throughout.
The Yakima fruit men are estimatlnr
their peach crop this season at 800
cars.
To AM Belgian Children
The birthday of the Queen of Bel
glum will be celebrated on Saturday.
July 27. In the happy days prior
to the war It was the custom of the
Belgians on that day to wear the
queen's favorite flower, the forget-
me-not. All the coast cities will
unite in paying homage to this no
ble woman, either on the 25th her
birthday or on the 27th her
"saint-day" and the dainty forget-me-nots
will be sold, tied with the
Belgian colors. The money derived
from the sales will be devoted to the
relief of Belgian children. The so
ciety will need the services of many
young women and children to aid in
the sale. Definite plans will be an
nounced early in the week.

Oregon Electric Is Blocked
By the breaking of an axle on one
of . the Cregon Electric cars near
Claxton station yesterday afternoon
traffic was completely blocked
throughout the afternoon, passen
gers from both directions and their
baggage being transferred around
the stalled car. All trains came in
to mis city an hour late In consequence.

Escape From Hospital
Because he was denied the privi
lege of going down town yesterday
afternoon, L. A. Money, a patient
at the Oregon state hospital took his
departure from the institution about
supper time. He arrived several
honrs later at the home of his fath
er, Josiah Morley, at Shaw. The
young man is considered harmless
and was on parole at the time of
his escape.

insane from Jackson county In Nov

a wood camp, where he was em
ployed. He is believed to hav gone
south. He is said to be harmless.

be dclvctod easily as an insane man.
Ncwstrom has a brother In Jackson
county. He Is about 40 years old.
