Good Record for Recruiting
It is doubtfull if any office in the
state holds a better per capita rec
ord for enlistments than the Salem
office, which" Is headquarters for the
territory embraced in Marion, Lin
coln, Benton. Linn and Polk. Since
Jan. 1, 1917, this territory has sup
plied 422 volunteers for military ser
vice, this being In addition to the
enlistments for the navy and marine
corps. lt should be noted also that
besides all the foregoing enlistments
this district has made up five com
panies of soldiers. Among the col
unteers, fully 65 per cent chose the
ity being the signal corps. The bal
aviatlon section, the next In popular
ance of the recruits were scattered
through, various branches, the In
fantry enrollment being very light.

Speaking about tbriit, tnere is no
Itv rettinz the better of
Salem. From an authoritative source
It is stated that rammes nere are
canning up pig-weed against a pos
sible scarcity of "green goods" next
winter. Really, there are worse ar
ticles of diet than pigweed, which Is
supposed to be the progenitor of th
ninarh in the rarden. Those who
have used It declare It to be a pala
