Shortly after reaching New York he will sail for France. The sound of mnslr. a woman' voiof, floated out over the lower em! of the ran ton men t tonight, far from the barracks and as.wnbljr halls, out In the barren wastes of a onre fertile field which has been turned Into a vast Non Man's Land with an Intricate system of trenches. The audience was composed of In fantrymen, many of whom bate been living: for many days In the trenches, digging In shirts of eight hours each, sleeping there and learn ing their lesaons of modern warfare away from the usual comforts of camp life. It was Just after dusk when Mrs. Herman T. Itohlman of Portland was taken to the divisional trench field In a Y. M. C. A. automobile to en tertain the soldiers with song. She sang several difficult selections and then turned to the old. songs which ail the men kenw. They joined in the chorus and soon the air rang with music from hundreds of voices. Mrs. Dohlman came to camp to as sist In the Y. M. C. A. plans for teaching the soldiers to sing and for entertainment to brighten army life. Earlier In the evening she appeared at Y. M. C. A hot No. 4 aiid then at the depot .brigade theater. It was the first time an entertainment had been given in the trenches, the asso ciation only recently having com pleted a hut there. Mrs. Bohlman will remain at camp until. Sunday night. Camp Lewis soldiers are to observe "Mothers' Day' Sunday. A call to church will be soanded throughout camp at 9:45 Snnday morning and a bulletin today invited every man tn camp to attend one of the services to be given at 1 0 o'clock In the morn fng In each of the Y. M. C. A. and Knights of Columbus buildings. The bulletin also requests every soldier to write a letter home Sunday, en closing' a Mothers' Day card which is to be placed at every mess plate in ramp Sunday at breakfast. Provision for release of voluntar ily enlisted men from service for work in the ship yards r necessary war Industrie was announced At camp today. The previous order nrovided only for the release of men from the national army. Ia order to obtain release for necessary war work. It Is necessary, to have the recommendation of the bureau chief or department head asking for the services of the man and It must be shown that the position f one which canont be filled by a civilian. Three hundred delegates to the state convention of the Parent Teachers' association In Tacoma. this afternoon visited Camp Lewis and were taken for a tour of the ramp In automobiles. Many of the women have friends and relatives at camp and there were many happy scenes ase they met their soldier friends at the Y. W. C. A. hostess house late this afternoon where all were invited for dinner. About twenty-five men from Washington. In Tacoma for rltnal work of the Scottish Rite Masons. today visited camp and were escort ed over the cantonment by an orderly from division headquarters. They visited the trenches where the sol diers learn the lessons they'll need when they get to France and were taken through the base hospital and shown the departments where some of the nation's best medical rperlal IMs are at the service of the soldiers. The X-ray room was of partlcnlartj interest to tnem.
