Halem Roy for Sheriff Frank Barager is a candidate for sheriff of Douglas county, on 'the Republican primary ticket. He was visiting Salem yesterday, calling on sjme of his old-time friends. Frank was a Salem bey. When be was a youngster he carried papers and col It c ted for The Statesman for several years. When he went to make his home in the southern part of Doug las county, he was missed here for he had been a faithful worker. Al ter a few years, he moved from southern Douglas to a farm about half way between Roseburg and Win chester fronting on tne oncer ram ous 'Joe Lane's lane' The writer does not know much about the poll- tics of Douglas county, or about Frank's chance for securing the nomination which-he seeks. But one thing is certain, and that is that if nominated and elected he will be always found faithfully on the Job, doing his work in a straightforward, honest manner; and giving good treatment and even-handed Justice to alL Because that Is the "ort of a boy he was, and the sort of man be has been. Aa a rule the prices are very rasonable, money is cheap and all farm prodi e Is Jilgh. If this war ever ends you will see a grand rush back to the farms in this section. Hundreds have left here to look for Jobs at high wages and some day they will be glad to come ba?k . iytblnk there have as many coming In here gone out in the past year. fW are con stantly receiving Inquiries. large pait of them come from Can ada. A lot of people have been at tracted to the wheat areas of Can ada, and some of them r making money, but the most of them are discouraged by the long cold winters. a - - AN ATTORNEY I predict that the new ordinance with regard to the loafing class will have a good moral effect upon the people for whom It is intended. It cannot be pressed too far without running up against constitutional rights, but it ought to go further than the mere vagiant class. There, are a lot of men who are not giving their families proper support, and I consider that any man who half feeds his, family is little better than a vagrant. There is ho excuse for any man who is able to work at all being witnout employ ment at this time. DRAEGER FRUIT COMPANY I think the past few days of- warm weather have practically assured the prune crop In this section. The petals sre falling from the bloom and there is a thorough pollenltatlon. A long cold rain would not do much injury at this time. I have recently been down In ' Douglas-county where we r have shipping stations, and I find the prospects are good for a crop there ia spite of the frosts.' Some of our finest prunes will be produced thet, for it Is an ideal location for the fruit. No, we are not worrying about the market for prunes; the govern ment is going to help us out with that. I am expecting developments in that direction within a few days.
