Embargo Has Influence;
Corn Average Is Lower
CHICAGO. March 20.- Corn av
eraged lower !n price today, influ
enced by the reinstatement of an
embargo against western cars loaded
with grain for shipment east of Chi
cago'. The close was unsettled at
$1,27 5-8 for March and $1.25 1-4
for May, with the final range as a
whole varying from 3-8l-2c. off
to 1-Sc advance, compared with 24
hours before. Oats lost one to one
and one-eighth cents. Provisions
finished unchanged to acven cents
higher.
As cofn cannot be shipped east
hereafter except in equipment fur
nished by eastern lines. It was ap
parent that the bull side of the mar
ket bad been placed under a decided
handicap,, for there are no surplus
cars on eastern lines. . Depressing
effects of the reinstatement of the
embargo were somewhat counter-bal
anced later In the day by an improv
ed demand here from Industries.
Oats, like corn, were pulled down
in value by the eastern embargo.
Besides, reports indicated a 10 per
cent increase of seeded acreage south
west.
Provisions averaged higher as a
result of hogs rising to the topmost
quotations yet this season.

Fresh Salmon Are Brought .
Here From Umpqaa River
It Is a strange fact, but neverthe
less true, that Salem, at certain sea
sons of the year, like the present, is
the center of the fresh salmon .busi
ness of the state. "
Yesterday W. S. Fitts. the fish
man, received about 1500 pounds of
rtresh salmon for shipment to Butte,
Mont., Great Falls. Mont.; and Spo
kane, the fish having been, caught In
the Umpo.ua river in southern Ore
eon and landed In Salem Inst nut of
! the water.
The run of salmon in the Umpqua
liver Is good and probably will con
! weigh fifteen to twenty pounds each,
I and are what are called "salmon
trout'r when they are a little young-
er than those on the market today.
Many families are taking advan
tage of the extraordinary run of
tmelt, about 1500 pounds being sold
daily, a large part of the smelt being
salted down for future use. "
TAKE ClIILimKX OUT OF
DANG Kit
If you saw a child on a railroad
track you would endeavor to remove
the little one from danger. When a
child Is '"snuffling" or coughing.
Isn't It your duty to get him out of
danger of severe consequences?
Foley's Honey and Tar gives relief
from coughs, cold, croup and whoop
ing cough. Contains no opiates. J

Manager Walker Expecting
Inspectors to Arrive Here
Manager Walker of the Salem
Kings Products company Is dally ex
pecting the arrival In Salem of gov
ernment inspectors from the war de
partment In Washington, who wilt
give instructions for the shipment
of the dehydrated potatoes now
ready to be moved.
"We are now putting through po
tatoes at the rate of twenty tons a
day, which gives us about thre-4 tons
of the finished product," said Mr.
Walker. "You can now easily un
derstand why dehydrated food prod
ucts are so very valuable to tbs gov
ernment. It Is not alone because
they keep tor an Indefinite period of
time, but what Is equally Important,
the government saves thousands of
dollars in transportation charges, as
well as being able to ship ten times
the quantity In any given space on
cars .or on ship board.
"We have now In the warehouse
and packing rooms at the plant up
wards of 200.000 pounds of the fin
ished product ready to shls on a
minute's notice." -
Germans Talk Offensive
t Only to Confuse Allies
WASHINGTON; March 20 Re
newal of German talk of a great west
front offensive this spring is ascribed
In official dispatches from Switxer
land today as due to 'the desire of
the German general staff to confuse
the allies as to Germany's real in-:
t?ntlons. .
Attention Is called, however, to
the concentration of strong German
forces In the west under able lead
ers. Germany's, advance notices of
an attack, in the words of the dis
patch, probably are designed to un
settle opinion and to circulate inac
curate information.
German newspapers are quoted to
show that big armies have been pit
in the west and Increasing artillery
activity. It is declared, may he of
more than passing significance.
Loyal Americans are willing to do
without everything but victory. And
It is. coming, although a bit deiayea
