Liberal re ceipts did a good deal torar to weaken the corn market, especially cash quotations, and so, too, dli withdrawal of export bids. Fu tures closed steady at the same as Saturday's finish to l-8e lower with March $1.28 and May $1.27 1-4. Oats lost 1-4 to l-2c net and provi sions 12c to 1 7c Arrivals of conr In Chifago alone aggregated 615 cars and there was a general disposition to look for a continued movement far above the average for this time of the ecr. Meanwhile the United States visible "upply total showed an Increase of more than 2,300.000 bushels, slak ing the amount in !siht only 1.4C0,- 000 bushels less than a year ago. A general embargo on shipments to eastern domestic consumers counted as a bearish influence. . Notable progress of seeding made oats average lower. A little export business gave the market souie stim- ulus but the effect failed to latt. Lower quotations on hog. weaken ed provisions. Declines were ch'K.k d nome what though by export of iard and meats during the week. SHIPBUILDERS TO BE EXEMPTED Negotiations in Progress Not to Draft Subjects of Allies in 0. S. WASHINGTON. March 11. Nego tiations are in progress between the United States and the allies for the exemption from draft of the allied nationals who are working in ship yards of this country but who are subject to draft under treaties now being negotiated. The United States desires to have the allies rerognize shipbuilding as a vital war service as the United States has recognized it. in exempting Americans who are !oig such work. Officials said the negotiations ef fect a good many thousand workers trained in shipbuilding, whose loss would 'prove a serious handicap to the building program and might pos sibly entail delays in special linos of work that would be disastrous. East em shipyards especially employ large numbers of aliens, including Scotch, Irish, Italians and Slavs, many of whom are highly skilled carpenters and iron workers. Approximately 250,000 English men and 60,000 Canadians would become liable for service under tieaties negotiated with those coun tries, but not yet ratified by the senate. The treaties permit the drafting of men between the ages of 20 and 40 years, who Include the most vigorous and productive of .tha shipyards alien employes. Similar treaties with Italy and Francs aro being negotiated. : - Committee to Give Advice on Agricultural Problems WASHINGTON, March 11.
