vert their oil burners to coal
burners. .
The shortsge Is due chiefly to the
fact that the government has com
msndered for war purposes most of
the tankera that bring oil to the isl
ands. , Not only is there a serious
shortage of fuel oil threatened, but
of by-products as well, such as dis
tillate, gasoline, kerosene and as
pbaitum. .
This Is expected to curtail. If not
put an end to Joy-riding and even to
the busineas use of automobiles. Gas
sold In Honolulu Is made rfom oil,
and fears sre expressed that the new
order of "things - will force the gas
company out of business. .
thtler Affects All Inland.
Virtually all industrial plants In
Hawaltt use oil for fuel, so the situ
ation promises to effect the entire
territory Immediately.
Food Administrator Herbert C.
Hoover has specifically called upon
the su.'ar men of Hawaii to Increase
their production. This, -it Is said,
cannot be done if there is a serious
shortage of oil, and hope is expressed
that, in order to protect this Industry

ble for the nation and its allies, the
national government will take meas
ures to provide the sugar planta
tions with the necessary oil. If thts
canot be done, they will have to use

of vessels, it is considered more than
doubtful if sufficient coal to keep
the wheels turning can be obtained,
unless srpeclal provision for more
ships Is made by the government.
CAMP CHANGES

Camp Lewis Has; Passed

Great Revolution
CAMP LEWIS. TACOMA, Wash..
Feb. 15. Five months have elapsed
since Csmp Lewis received Its first
quota of selective draft men, freon
from civilian life, to be given the
military training necessary in the
building of aa army. In that eora
parat'ely short period the improve
ments In both the physical condition
of the men, and their training camp
have been marked. It ! interesting
to compare the camp of tottay with
the partially completed camp whl'h
greeted the first contingents early In
September, 1917.
Officers who bsd been assigned to
organize the first units which ; the
men were to form, were present to
conduct th- recruits to their regi
tnent V - The flr California ron
tlngent. for Instance, was; taken to
the 363d infantry regiment which
was subsequently entirely filled with
men roro the Golden stnte. From
the mustering tents to the 383d the
men wslked acrosi a de:terted prslriv
fringed with pines. The road was not
even rraded.
When the second draft arrives
they will find a military training
camp complete in (very detail from
the large adminlstrstlon building
down to the Jiorse. corrals in the re
mount -fiepoL Even the grounds
about the barracks have been graded
and beautified br the present occu
pants. Paved thbroughfares have
been constructed, scores of addition
al buildings erected, a most efficient
hospital system created, placea of
amusement opened for the enlisted
men, a hostess house completed, a
post lat'.dry is operating and nu
merous other improvements r have
been rtf.ae. .
