Appointment of Sargent s Successor Awaits Kay's Coming Charles H. Stewart, who has been assistant state superintendent of banks under 8. G. Sargent, was yes terday appointed temporary superin tendent to take the place of Mr. Sar-! gent who asked the banking board that he be allowed to quit the otflce i noon ioaay.. Through the nature of the statute creating the office of state superin tendent of banks, all deputies ln the office are automatically eliminated by the "resignation of the superin tendent, For this reason an imme diate appointment to fill the racan ey was necessary. It was the de sire of the banking board to hold up permanent appointment until the re turn of State Treasurer Kay who Is expected back from the east Wednes- r and ne Pmanent appointment or Sargents' successor will probably be soon after that time. Mr Stewart is a candidate for the position and has the recommenda tion of Mr. Sargent. He Is the choice of Secretary of State Olcott but not of Governor Wlthyeombe, who be lleres that a banker of more experi ence should have the place. Mr. Ol cott announced at the time Sargent resigned that he would support whomsoever Sargent might recom mend. CHAPTER TO SET AMOUNTS ASIDE Moit Soldiers' Dependents in Salem Hope to Pay Bacjc Help Fund f Willamette chapter, American Red Cross, will ba asked bv the civilian relief comlmttee of the chapter to set aside $100 a month for care 0f local dependent famine's of soldiers or sailors. This action was decided upon at a meeting of the committee yesterday. It Is not believed that to whole amount will be needed and any residue will revert to the chap ter. .- , The committee Is already helping a number of dependent familie and Manager McDaniel of the commercial club has a list of all others that are likely to need assistance. Many of these need assistance only until the first installments of their soldiers pay allowances are received. The main reason for askinsr that a. cer tain sum be set aside by the chapter for the use of the committee Is to spare dependents the embarrassment or going before the chapter board. Tne chapter has nrocured the wn ices ot a woman recently from Seat tle wno represents, tbe committee in visiting dependent families and as certaining their needs. She reports that most of those now being' helped request that the money allowed thm be considered as a loan, declaring that they will pay back the amounts upon receipt of their allowances.
