The outcome in provisions ranged from 10c decline to an ad vance of five cents. Unfavorable weather for the crop movement from the country made corn prices harden a little at the out set, but the fact speedily, became ap parent that the adverse conditions prevailing had materially diminish ed. - A further reason given for the evident cautiousness of. buyers was the prospect of enlarged government control of grain prices other than wheat. Urgent export demand for ship ment by the way of the gulf did much to hoist the value of oats, and so, too, did the meagerness of arrivals. New high price records for the sea son were reached for all deliveries, with the market showing its greatest strength just at the close.-, Provisions averaged slightly high er owing to the fact that hog receipts were less plentiful than had boon expected. Aggressive support, how ever was lacking. 9 ROUGHAGES HELP CONSERVE GRAIN. Roughage should replace part of the grain In erery ration. More foughagetmust also be grown tn or der that the grains used for human food may be saved. In feeding livestock grain we know that It takes approximately five pounds of grain to produce one pound of meat. Now, In food value the five pounds of grain is worth considerably more than the' one pound of meat. This would lead to the conclusion that stock should not be fed on grain, but further consid eration would show this to be poor economy of feed staffs and poor bus. iness policy. It takes entirely too much feed and too long a time to fatten without grain, and It would cripple the livestock bu$!nS9 to cut down the number of stock animals. - However. saving can tx made of the grains which gre valuable for human food and for shipping to places of greater need for Rrestock. More roughs ges staowjd be grown as well as grains, because, with a Uttle added roughage and a little less grain a considerable saving of grata can be made without affecting the ration appreciably. Hay can not be trans- lm. 'mw Si ev m. . rw mm Br CLHC ported cheaply any ireat distance on account of Its bulk! for the feeding value contained In It. However, when this Is changed, to meat through feeding a grea( sating In transporta tion is made,, and a saving tn the grains which can be used for human food. - ' ' . ' '' There should be no burning or plowing under of straw or cornstalks any year. C. A. C. HIS OLD YELLOW ALMANAC 1 left the farm when mother died and changed my place of dwellln To daughter Susie's stylish house, right in the city street. And .there was them, before I came, that sort of scared ma, tellln a How 1 would find tha town folks' way so difficult to meet. They said I'd have no comfort In the rustlin', fixed-up throng. And I'd have to wear stiff collars every week day right along. . I find I take to city ways just like a duck to water; . . . I like tha racket and the noise and never tire of shows; And there's no end of comfort in the mansion of my dsughter. And everything is right at hind, and money freely . flows: And hired help is all about just listen in for my call. But 1 miss the yetlew almanac off my Jtltchen wall. .. The- house Is full of calendars, from attto to the cellar. They're palated In all colors and are fancy -like to see; . Cut Just in this particular I'm not a modern fellow, , . And the yellow-covered almanae Is good enough for me; I'm used to It, I've seen it round from boyhood to old age And rather like the Jokln at the bot tom of each page. I like the way tha S 'stood out to show the week's beglnnin. (In these new-fangled calendars the days seem sort of mixed). And he man upon the cover, though he wasn't exactly wlnnln' Wltn lungs and liver all exposed, still showln' how we are fixed; And tha letters, credentials that was writ to Mr. Ayer. I've often on a rainy day found read In very fair. f tried to find one recently, there was n't one In the city. They toted out great calendars In every eort of style; I looked at 'em In cold disdain and answered 'em In pity, "I'd rather have my almanae than all that eeatly pile." And though I take to city life, I'm lone- pome arter ail 1 For that old yellow almanae upon my aitcnen wail. Ella W. Wilcox. A RECORD OX THK FLOCK.
